Do you have to have a disney ticket to go to Downtown Disney....just wondering if we could go the night before we head to the parks

No you do not need tickets for DTD.

it's free to walk around. quite fun too. you get that disney-type feeling without even stepping foot into one of the parks.

That is exactly what we did. We went over to DTD the evening we arrived to get into the disney mood before we headed to the parks the following morning, plus give you a chance to wander through the largest Disney store ever! There's a lot of stores and resturants and street musicians at several locations playing. It's a lot of fun and really got everyone excited.
