We will be at Disneyland for the first time (from NJ, WDW vet) in Oct and staying right across the street from the main entrance. What is the best way to get to Downtown Disney from there. We will have a car but would rather not use it.

TIA, Steve

If you are staying right across from the main gate on harbor, you can just walk through the esplanade to DTD. Should be a 5-10 minute walk depending which hotel you are at.

Think of Disneyland/California Adventure/Downtown Disney at a "T". Where the horizontal bar crosses the top are where the entrances to DL/DCA are located (the entrances are literally a few hundred feet away from each other). The vertical bar on the "T" is Downtown Disney. If you are standing facing the entrance to DL, the entrance to DCA will be behind you and DD will be to your left.

As others have said, it's very easy to walk from the Main Entrance (on Harbor Blvd, south of Ball and north of Katella) to DTD. You will have to go through security to cross the Esplanade, but other than that it's a very easy walk.
