Please tell me about down blankets. Do you love them, hate them? We are in a cold climate and need a little extra warmth on our beds..thought about a light/medium down blanket.

Is it true that they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer while being very light on the bed?

We use ours in the winter only. They get really hot in the summer.

Yes, yes, yes, to all the above. We live in Central Florida and use a down duvet all year long! It's a lightweight one. We've considered purchasing a heavier one, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you are going to buy one, get one that is sewn into baffles or squares. It makes the loft easier to maintain. The loft is what keeps you warm. :)

Get the highest thread count you can afford, and absolutely use a duvet cover.

We also use a feather "mattress" on top of our regular mattress. It's essentially a heavier down duvet, but a bit sturdier. It adds softness and contributes to temperature comfort. It's like creating your own pillow top mattress.

Avoiding designer names, purchase the best duvet you can afford. (The designer name adds to the cost, not the performance or quality).

I found a good deal on a Sealy down comforter and it was the best purchase I've ever made! It looks horrible now because I've had to patch it a couple of times, but you couldn't pay me to get rid of it.

A couple of years ago, our heater broke in the middle of winter. For as cold as our house got, I never realized it until I got out of bed because of how warm the comforter kept me.

We use ours year round, too. We are on our second one. I did find that the first one REALLY smelled like duck!

We use ours year round.... I love ours.... the one we have now I got at JC Penny's and it has lasted us more than a year.... we love it

We've been using them for about 15 years now, all year long. We also have one in our camper and we take one with us when we stay at hotels. I can't sleep without my feathers. When they go on sale (a really good sale) we buy several so we always have a new spare.

We live in WV and use our down comforter from Sept. to May~we LOVE IT!!! We use a duvet cover, so we only have to febreeze/dry on "fluff"!:thumbsup2

i've used them all year round - cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I also love, love, love our electric blankets in the winter.

I use a down blanket all year long (not a comforter). It's maybe an inch thick and it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. QVC sells them in their Northern Nights line. I have bought them for gifts and no one can ever believe how warm they keep you. They also go through the wash and come in different colors.

DHs cousin works for Pacific Coast Feather and we got our down blanket thru her. It's on the bed year-round, although I often find it too warm for the summer (but I am weird that way--DH still uses it) LOVE it! It's not as warm as a down comforter and that makes it perfect.

Not all feather & down products are created equal. I bought 2 feather & down pillows from Overstock.com & boy were they scratchy! Ouch! Feathers equal quills. The long pokey things they used to make pens out of.

Make sure you feel the blanket/comforter/pad/pillow first, before you buy.

I get my stuff from Bed, Bath & Beyond now, for that very reason. They also have 20% off coupons in the Sunday papers, you can use on the items, too. :cool1:

Every winter we add a down blanket (not down comforter) to our bed. Nice & warm without too much weight. We got ours from QVC. Kitty loves it too. :goodvibes Also have down pillows from QVC. Come to think of it, the BEST flannel sheets we've ever gotten are also from QVC too. lol Really thick & last without getting pilly.

Northern Nights line.

We never used down products until we stayed at a Sheraton in their Heavenly Beds. OMG!!! Best nights sleep ever while at a hotel. If I could afford their mattress, I would sooooo buy one. Until then, down pillows & blankets. lol

I use mine year round. I've even thrown it in the wash & it's still good. I wouldn't use anything else. :)

I have a down throw I use on the couch and a down comforter on my bed. I got them both at Target. They are not 100% down, they are 50% down and 50% poly fill. But both keep me nice and warm. And instead of cotton they are made with microfiber. Very smooth to the touch.
