dose anyone ever rent a car and drive from there house to the world?

My dh hates to fly so we are going to rent a car. how do you go about finding good deals from renting from your home town?

Well, we rented a car to drive from central NJ to Cedar Point in Ohio last summer. We ended up getting a GREAT deal thru National from Newark airport. $189/week for an SUV, a Buick Rendevouz. (loaded, leather seats, 100 miles on it!) Unlimited miles.

We got this one from an email from National. This particular special was available at the airport locations, not local little offices. I would say, go to EVERY major rental company and sign up for their email specials. Our minivan had 145,000 mile son it, we were nervous taking it for a long trip......... the rental was well worth it! I would say it popped up about 4-6 weeks before the trip.

Where do you live - (Central NY doesnt quite narrow it down) - Usually the cheapest rates can be found at airports. There is probably a local rental car location in your town or close by.

check out each rental car website for rates - do a google search on car rental companies or something like that. There are a lot of companies.

Besides these suggestions you just have to do digging and research. Check web sites often.

Be sure your rental includes unlimited mileage, or at least enough miles for your trip. Some rentals that include unlimited mileage limits your driving to the state of rental, or an adjacent state.

Make sure you let the rental companies know you're planning on traveling out of state. Many companies prohibit that- in fact, some people have been arrested while on trips like that. The companies have GPS units built into the cars, & when you cross state lines they track you down. You're shocked, until they point out the paragraph in your rental contract where you agreed not to take the car out of state.

Another thing to look into- renting cars from a car dealer. If you can persuade a car dealer that you're a potential customer (like you've purchased cars from them before), they usually have really good deals on late model cars to take on vacation- sort of a really long test drive.

Renting from airport locations will give you more flexiblity. Alot of the local offices have restrictive hours, only being open a few hours a day. And sometimes they are closed on Sundays and holidays. The airport locations usually have longer business hours.

The only bad thing about airports is that the taxes are often a lot higher.


Oh, and I forgot one of my favorite tips- Priceline! We've used Priceline for our last few rental cars, and it's great. Unlike the hotel and airline parts of Priceline, the only thing you don't find out before putting in a bid is the name of the company you'll be renting from. They only use 4 or 5 of the main nationwide chains, so that's not usually a problem. You just pick the class of car you'd like to drive, the dates when you need it, and your bid.

You don't get to pick the specific make and model of the car you want, but most companies won't guarantee that anyway. I usually do some research to find out what most of the companies are charging, and then put in a bid for about half that price. It usually works really well.

We just got back from Disney a week ago. We rented a car for to weeks from Avis. Not from the airport though because it is higher there. We paid 402.00 dollars for 14
days unlimited miles for a buick lesabre. I booked off their webpage but you have to click where it says lower rates offsite, not airport.
