DH and I have decided we would like to take a vacation to Door County next summer, probably in July.

I have been doing a little research today and I am kind of overwhelmed by it all. I am pretty sure we want accomadations that are waterfront and more of a resort feel.

Has anyone stayed at Stone Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay? http://www.stoneharbor-resort.com/

For those that have been to Door County, is there an area you like the best? What are your favorite things to do there?

It seems like we could be as relaxed as we want to be or pretty busy with lots of things to see. :)

Thanks for any information! :)

Jenn Lynn, we are headed to the Door on Saturday! :p We rent a house every year, pile DD and the dogs in the van and off we go and we love it more each summer. IMO, I think you should look higher up the penninsula, no offense to Sturgeon Bay, but it is just at the very end of the door and still feels a bit touristy and crowded to me.

We stay in a house we rent from the www.alpineresort.com in Egg Harbor and it is fabulous. The Alpine is nice for many reasons; it has a wide variety of accomodations, from rooms at the resort to small cabins to multi-bedroom houses. We are renting a four-bedroom house right on the water. It is bigger than we need, but the dogs will be able to go out and play in the bay, a big bonus for us. They also have two golf course and a big resort main house where you can play lots of games, listen to goofy bands play, paddle out in the bay in a row boat, play on the sand beach, all part of the price. They also have a decent restaurant.

Egg Harbor is really wonderful, it is about half way up making everything easy to get to. It is full of little places to eat and shop. A close second is Fish Creek, another beautiful little town. One of the big appeals of Door COunty, to us anyway, is the fact that no franchises are allowed in the county. That means, no Wal-mart, no Starbucks, no Barnes and Noble, etc. Now, I am not saying that these places are evil, I shop in all of them, but it is really nice to go someplace where little individual stores can survive.

When you go, try and see a show at the Penninsula Players Theater in the Penninsula State Park. They are wonderful, but the setting is even better. There is so much to do in Door County that we never get tired of going. We couldn't make it last year for various reasons and we missed so much, I can't wait till Sat! If you have any other questions, let me know and I will see what I can do! :)

WE go at least twice a year to Door county camping and LOVE it! There are many "resorts" to chose from. I would check out the Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Ephraim (sp) for places to stay. Ephraihm has many "resort" with harbor views. It probably has the best lake views.

Sturgeon Bay is on the lower "end " of Door County. I would stay in the above towns.. Peninsula state park in Fish Creek is a beautiful park with a great bike trail. There are many places to rent bikes and its a great way to spend a day. The chamber of comerse I believe will send you the Door couty guide with all the places to stay.

Did you check out www.doorcounty.com

I think you can sign up there to have the guide sent to you.

We were there in the middle of July. We stayed in Ephraim. It was a beautiful area - actually reminded me a lot of home. I would probably stay on that side even though our favorite beach was on the other side, close to Sturgeon Bay at Whitefish Dunes State Park.

We are camping timeshare owners at Harbour Village Resort ( www.harbourvillageresort.net ) in Door County and spend almost every other weekend up there. As a matter of fact, my DW and DD are up there right now and I'm heading up tomorrow after work. We have stayed at Stone Harbor in Sturgeon Bay and it is very nice! You have to try a fish boil and take the ferry over to Washington Island. Cave Point County Park is kind of nice and the Cana Island light house is something to see too. The Maritime museum in Sturgeon Bay is very interesting and they have a boat tour you can take from there too. If you have any specific questions, just PM me and I'll try to help you out!

DisOr Bust-We defnitely want a good lake view! Thanks for the link for the guide. :)

disykat-How was the weather in July?

Big V-I will definitely keep you in mind as DH and I are planning this trip and we have questions! Thank you. :)

It has been a number of years, Jenn Lynn, since we have been to Door, we used to alternate each year between Door and Galena. Just wanted to say that you will love it, wherever you go there, a wonderful vacation spot. Enjoy.

Thanks Dan! :)

I love Galena too! Went there quite a bit growing up. Even went skiing there (I don't ski ;) with my girlfriends in High School.

My friend had a star named "The Galena Snowbunnies" after us. It was a neat gift. :)
