Don't reuse those water bottles!

I think that was published by the bottled water industry

I'm so glad I immediately recycle them - yuck! I had heard about this, but never read about why it was unhealthy. Thanks for the info.

It's only common sense to thoroughly wash and dry any drinking container before it is reused.. However, if you thoroughly rinse your OWN bottle and re-drink from it on the SAME day (as in a day at Disney) the odds are slim to none that you will become ill..

Just use your common sense..

The ladies at work give me a hard time about this. I saw the article a few weeks ago and printed it out to show them. For the next week or two I kept asking if they were reusing a water bottle. Now they know better! ;) I have to look out for them! :p

I normally reuse my water bottles but I can't imagine not washing it before using it again. And I don't reuse them for that long, I've heard that over time, chemicals from the plastic break down into the water. That was enough for me to hear.

a similar study was done a while back on coffee cups (especially those in offices). It seems many people don't wash them with soap. They only rinse them out. I beleive all cups tested that had not been washed failed.
Personally I think the lesson is to wash eating/drinking items daily even if they contained only water. (that reminds me, just how long has it been since I washed my Blizzard beach cup that I use for ice water)

Aw man, they had to go ruin one of my biggest money-saving techniques! I do this for soda bottles, too. I'm gonna go wash my bottle right now, since I don't have a new one to bring to work tomorrow. Of course, I haven't had vomiting and diarrhea since I was like a teenager. (Oops I shouldn't have said that.)

we use water bottles but we always wash them before...we send them through the dishwasher and everything

I couldn't imagine just refilling them after being in the car...I've drinken hot water bottles from being in my car before and it practically burned my tongue

12yo dd was reusing w/o washing. She would put it in the freezer and drink it the next day, over and over. Needless to say dad was grossing out over it and told her she had to wash it after use. As you may have guessed she has not done it since.

I'm rather a germaphobic about certain things and wash anything we reuse. But I have a friend that NEVER washes her bottle and DOES often have stomach problems:smooth: , this was good proof!
The sentence about the "fecal material" was disturbing  !

The article, although, I agree with it, is definitely fabricated and probably issued by the bottling industry (whom have there own problems).

I love the bottled Dasani water at WDW and I love the spout. I buy about 4-5 bottles a day. I bring them back to our one bedroom and wash them through the dishwasher!

Why didn't the article tell you to do that, or better yet, put some water in the bottle and put in the microwave for 30 seconds. That will kill the bacteria.

The fact that the article did not address a solution, makes it part of the problem.

Drink as much water as you want in your reusable bottle. At the end of the day, put it in the dishwasher, use soap and run it! - Common sense!

I haven't done that too often but I do it occasionally. Common sense though tells you to wash it after you use it and let it dry, that's what I do. How could someone not wash the bottle and keep refilling it for days? gross!!

We re-use water bottles and rarely run them through the dishwasher or use soap.

A few months ago, my sister tried warning me about the dangers of not closing the toilet lid before flushing because of the very fine mist that floats into the air and deposits everywhere, including your toothbrush on the counter.

I figure that if either of these issues were a serious health threat, my whole family would ALWAYS be sick. Instead, we are a pretty healthy group.

I have to agree that the bottling industry is probably trying to cause some sort of hysteria over this and thus increase their own sales..

I have a VERY sensitive stomach and have never had any problems with reusing bottles.. Also, the medical community has determined that the reason people are sick more often now - and the antibiotics aren't working as well - is BECAUSE people have become so phobic about each and every germ.. The constant use of anti-bacterial soaps, anti-bacterial hand wipes, and the like, is causing human resistance to go way down from what would normally be tolerated..

Just routine cleanliness (the kind that Mom & Dad taught 30 years ago) is fine.. Save all the money you would spend on anti this and anti that - as well as the money you would save by thoroughly cleaning your water bottles after use - and take an extra trip to Disney!!!

;)

I am ever so guilty of re-using my water bottle that I take to the gym. So far, I've not had any stomach problems, but I guess I'll have to be more careful.
