My 10-yr-old DS and I were all set to leave this Thursday, our first trip to WDW, and thanks to the many kind souls who had patiently answered my many questions, our 7-day stay was mapped out (allowing for contingencies from weather to crowds).
But the one thing I could not plan for happened -- DS was in an ATV accident while vacationing with his mom, breaking his ankle.
I cannot blame either one of them (though I did warn them about ATVs, I really can't stand those things) because they were just trying to have a good time, and mom was on board despite DS's plea to ride alone. Her actions kept the accident from being much worse, and for that I am thankful.
But I am still very disappointed. I had planned this trip for more than a year, especially over the last three months (obsessing about it, perhaps). Though he could probably get around on crutches and/or wheelchair, I am not going to spend our dream vacation with a hobbled, in-pain DS. His mom said she would have taken him anyway, if it were up to her. But it is not, so I have postponed our trip, and the very kind Disney travel folks were able to enter via a back door on the reservations system to secure our reservations for next summer. At a higher cost, of course, but I have another year to save.
On the upside, I am in the midst of scheduling a December trip to Disneyland (much closer to home, we live in Phoenix) for he and I to ease some of the disappointment.
So please be careful out there, people. And again, thank you for all your advice. No doubt I'll be hitting the boards again in March, preparing for our summer 2006 visit.
