Just found this on another site and thought it might be of interest to some that are about to travel....

Thieves early Sunday broke into at least 32 cars parked at eight Universal Studios-area hotels and one nightclub, stealing any valuable items the owners had left behind.

Almost half of the vehicles were burglarized at the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites at 5905 Kirkman Road, where the thieves broke into 15 cars by smashing windows but were undetected by hotel security.

Calls for comment to the eight hotels were not returned Sunday.

The amassed booty includes electronic equipment, cell phones and compact discs, police said.

"They reached in and grabbed anything they could," said Orlando police Sgt. Patrick Guckian.

The other hotels hit were a second Holiday Inn at 6515 International Drive, Hampton Inns at 7110 S. Kirkman Road and 5621 Windhover Drive, a Howard Johnson at 6603 International Drive, the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel at 5800 Universal Blvd., the I-Drive Inn at 6323 International Drive and the Imperial Swan Hotel at 7050 S. Kirkman Road.

An area nightclub, J.J. Whispers, 4732 S. Kirkman Road, was also hit.

Police estimated the break-ins happened between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Because of the large number of cars burglarized, a group likely committed the crimes, Guckian said.

The tactic employed was the same in all cases, he added.

"They used the same method: broken passenger window," Guckian said. "It was obviously done by the same people."

There are no known witnesses to any of the incidents.

Investigators were retrieving the security video Sunday from a camera at one of the hotels, hoping that it might contain clues. They also lifted prints at the crime scenes.

Area hotels are full because of the July Fourth weekend, theme parks' festivities and the scheduled shuttle launch. The crowds provide criminals more people and cars from which to steal, Guckian said.

Im sorry but why would you be so silly as to leave valuables in your car overnight, I would never do that, some people just don't think.

You travel along way from the UK to Orlando to buy some pretty good bargins I wouldn't risk it all by leaving stuff in the car.

The first year we went to Orlando, whilst waiting for a parade to start, I started chatting to an american woman standing next to me. They had parked their hire car the night before, with everything and I mean everything. When they got up in the morning to drive from I-Drive to Disney the car had been broken into and the lot taken. This included camera, digital camera, video camera, most of their luggage, souvenirs, cash, credit cards and travellers cheques. What were they thinking about :confused3

I don't think they were, that's the problem.... every time I hear of something like that, it reminds me that the average human IQ is 100... you can't expect the average person to have a very high intellect or amount of common sense :confused3

EVEN IF (but I wouldn't!) you leave your baggage (i.e. suitcases full of clothes) locked in the BOOT of your car (OUT OF SIGHT), for goodness sake, you still take your valuables/money/cards in with you...

Suppose it is similar to people who insist on putting valuables (electronics, jewellery etc...) in their checked luggage, then expressing outrage or complete niaivity when those valuables get stolen...

Thanks for posting this Claire, I know sometimes when people are on holidays they do forget to be as vigilant as they should be, so its good to have a reminder :thumbsup2

Last August when DS and his DGF were staying at OKW, 10 cars were broken into and also vandalised. They were kept awake all night with the police lights flashing outside their room.

I really have to agree ~ would you leave anything valuable in the car!!! but some people go into holiday mode and do things they wouldn't do at home or at anyother time! :confused3

lucky for us we wont have a car to leave valuables in then! :rotfl:

i have to admit its a bit silly....when I've been away with my parents we clear the car every time we leave it, partly cos its a hire car and if you don't get into the habit of taking stuff out then it's likely you'll leave something when you return it, and partly because people can claim an area is safe or whatever but opportunists are everywhere

We leave the CDs we take in the glove compartment but they not really valuables these days are they? We never leave anything else in there and our cameras and phones are constantly with us, what's the point of taking your camera to WDW and leaving it in the car??

We are the same and just have our CDs in the glove compartment.

I must admit there have been occasions where we have left luggage in the car/minivan , sometimes it's unavoidable , especially if you have checked out of one place and waiting to check in at another.
Would never leave any camera equipment or anything of high value though and would always ensure nothing is visible either.

But its no different to parking you car at a hotel in the UK. The same problems occur here.

How many time do you read in your local papers of cars being broken into and laptops, mobile phones and Tom Tom's being stolen?

This didn't happen at disney, but about 4 years ago my husband and I went on holiday just for 3 nights it was a break from the kids and work etc, we arrived early hours of the morning, so didn't unpack our case, just took out what we needed. Went out all day came back to our room, changed and went out again, arrived back to hotel at around 1am, only to find someone had broken into our room, (Jemmied open patio door)took our suitcase with all clothes and even bothered to remove everything from our bathroom, there was nothing of value in the case, except they took our hand luggage bag with our flight tickets home in. So the moral of this is I now never leave anything in the car or in an unpacked suitcase in the hotel room.
