I have some left over points that will expire if not used I called member services and they don't have charity for these does anyone know a charity that collects points ?

You can not transfer points to a charity unless that charity also owns points, and then they'd be limited to one transfer into their account per year...so not practical.

If you have enough points left over, you should contact a charity, and ask if you could make a reservation for them...or offer a reservation to one of your favorite local charities for a silent auction type thing. You will still need to do all the work of making the reservation or putting in the names of the recipients.

I used to donate enough points in a silent auction to allow the purchaser to stay in a studio for 5 nights. I own points at SSR and AKV. It was for the parochial school that my son used to attend. There were two drawbacks. One was that I didn't know how to value the donation on my taxes, since it was donation to a charitable organizations. The people who won the auction got a really great deal. They only paid about $650 or so for the stay, and, I bid against them. I wanted it to at least cover the cost of renting the points. My logic was that if I bought back my own points, I wasn't really donating points, I was making a donation to the school. The family who got my points wanted to go over spring break, and the auction was in February. Fortunately, I was able to accomodate them. I don't remember whether it was AKV or SSR. But, then, I had trouble getting the principal to give me written acknowledgement of the donation. As if they had thousands of donors who had donated items, which wasn't true. So, since the school administration behaved as if they were doing me a favor by accepting my donation, I didn't do it again. Now they have a new principal, and I might consider doing it this year.

Per IRS regulations, we cannot deduct a timeshare stay. If you donate your ownership to a charity, it is deductible but a reservation does need meet the deductible rule as I understand it.

Perhaps a better action would be to rent the reservation and contribute the cash proceeds to the charity, which should then be deductible.

Doc is correct, no deduction for partial use of a timeshare, condo, vacation home, etc. I know it's done but it's an audit flag from what I've been told.

On the other hand if it's just a few points someone might be able to use them to complete a reservation and you could transfer them into their account.

Thank you everyone for great advice does anyone know a charity that already has Dvc points?
It wouldn't be feasible other than maybe for DVC itself to do so due to the transfers limitations. You might find a charity able to use the nights such as Make a Wish. I know there has been info about those type of issues previously from those who had investigated such options.

I have posted this many times before. We have donated a weekend stay to a volunteer at Give the Kids the World. We contacted the charity, they found a volunteer, we made the reservation and got a Thank You. It was better than letting the points expire. It is the only time a stranger to us used our points.

Incidentally, we now are regular donators to Give The Kids, so the gift was not without a financial expense to us!:)

As a "Thank you" to us for donating the stay, they put us on a mailing list. We have become monthly sponsors!:goodvibes. Totally our choice, but like people say about DVC costing more money than you thought, this donation has led to a payout we had never before considered.

I am not complaining, merely pointing out.

Bobbi;)

Thanks, so much, for pointing that out, Bobbi! :teeth:

I agree, thanks, I knew there was some additional info, I simply couldn't remember the specifics or author.
