your cell phone provider (or any cell phone provider) will take the phones for you and send them along, so you don't have to mail them, and that way you know that they will go to local people in need.

DH and I donated four phones before we moved - I still don't know why we had so many!

When you drop off the phone with the provider, did you get the tax benefits / donation receipt?

I just want to make sure the provider is sending the phone to people in need, and not re-sell it for commercial use.

Yes, we did get the receipt. I talked to my husband yesterday about it, and he did tell me that they (cell phone provider) don't do it ALL the time, but that they always have names of women's shelters in the area who would take them.

My DH worked for a company that puts cell phones together. They have always had this program. They were on the Good Morning America show, about 2 yrs ago. The phones are programmed with a 911 button. I too think anyone who has an old phone should donate it.
