Domain registration question

Does anyone know how long you have to wait after a domain has expired before you can register it?

There's a domain I want, and it expired on the 3rd of July. I went to that domain a month ago and the owner was using it as a blog. Their most recent entry said they wouldn't be renewing.

So I've tried grabbing it, but haven't been able to do so -- it keeps saying it's already registered.

It could very well be someone grabbed it before you did... If not, then just keep waiting & trying. If the domain hoster has a telephone # I'd give them a call to see what's up.

I thought that, too, JoNo, but a week later it's still registered to the same person with the expiration date at July 3rd, 2003.

I sent them an email asking about it, but I'll honestly be surprised if I get a response.

If you don't mind me asking, what domain are you trying to get? I can probably get you lots more information than you think you can get.

I would call them at 413-499-6690 and see when it is going to be removed from the previous owner's rights.

When the registration for the domain name that matches mine expired, I checked regularly to see whether or not I could grab it. But apparently the registrar didn't release it for some reason and eventually the original owner renewed his registration. The whole concept escapes my understanding.

I'm wondering if it goes into "non-registerable" mode for a month or something to give the original owner enough time to re-register it.

Well, whatdyaknow. I actually got a response, a real response, to my email.

Apparently they keep domains for 40 days after they expire, then if it's a .com they keep it another 20-30 days before it's open for re-registering.

So, I've just got to wait two months.
