Several weeks ago I read a thread by a Diser stating that when they went to pick up their car from Dollar that they were told that the car was too small for them and they were offered a bigger car for extra $'s which they took! The same thing happened to us. I've lost track of the number of times that we have rented cars in the US and we always get a 4 door intermediate and we have never had a problem. However this time we were told that the car would be too small for us and for $186 we could have an upgrade. There was no way that they were getting any more money out of me! The sales man even told us that we would be back after we got to the car asking for an upgrade and that the $186 was a one off offer and it would cost us more when we came back. Needless to say we put our luggage in the car and drove off with the $186 in our pocket!!!

Shame they have bad reps like this. Problem is people fall for it so they will keep doing it. We always book Full size for 3 of us, loads big enough and half the time we get upgraded free.

This happened to my dad. They said the car would be too small for four adults so they offered him a Chrysler 300 for $20 extra per day, he refused. Then the guy said, oh I see you've been before, he had, but hadn't rented from Dollar before so he gave them a "discount" down to $10 per day, my dad fell for it.

They tried it with us a few years ago, but we were happy with what we had so refused, turned out they didn't have our size of vehicle so had to upgrade us anyway.

This is usually the reason the try get you to pay for an upgrade, they don't have the car you prebooked. They might as well try get you to pay more than just give it to you free.

We always use Alamo and have never had a problem like this. Glad that you said no and din't let them bully you. :thumbsup2

Also the time of year that we go it's so quiet that they just say here you go that's our lot pick a car! :goodvibes

Hard sell is the reason I won't use Alamo, personally never had a problem with Dollar or Budget but the one time we rented from Alamo they had no cars for the 1st 24 hours then when they eventually got some in rather than appologizing all they could do was try the hard sell for upgrading.
All rental companies are the same, depends which rep you get, they all employ good and bad.

I have used Dollar numerous times and they have always tried to Upsell, whether it be sat nav, pre paid tolls, upgrades. I would not describe it as hard sell. Wayne is correct, they dont usually have your car so you will more than likely get the one they are trying to upsell anyway.

Has anyone booked a car fully inclusive and still been charged for a tank of fuel? When we got home there was £45 charge for fuel on our credit card.

Wow £45!! :scared1: I don't know what size car you had, but we booked ours fully inclusive filled it once (cost $30) and returned it basically running on fumes! I've just double checked and they didn't charge us anything extra! I hope that it's not too much hassle getting that sorted! :goodvibes
