more questions,

do travellers cheques have an expiry date?

I have read that you can use them like cash is this true?

if you can use them like cash is it worth getting some now for 2007 as the exchange rate is very good. Say I bought some and need to convert them into cash, wouldnt I lose out if the exchange drops between now and next year. or is it better to get a travellers cheque card?

Think about, maybe, the travellers cheque card :sunny:
It is, I think, valid for 2 years :confused3

It often appears in the travel agents with 'free' money.
I bought a $2000 one, in Jan, with an extra $250 'free' dollars attached :thumbsup2

The only place I was unable to use the travellers cheque card was at the local crazy golf - and I daresay I wouldn't have been able to use a traveller's cheque there either

If you were to have to change either the card (via a cash point) or the travellers cheques back to pounds you would get a lower rate than shops were selling - just as if you were changing your travellers cheques / currency back at the end of a holiday :)

Yes, this is true. On our last two trips we used TC's as cash in restaurants, theme parks, petrol stations and all manner of shops. You pay with a TC and you get change in normal money. It is that easy :)

we take traveller chequesin dollars and spend them like cash (though did need id)

I wont be using the card as I cant keep up with the ammounts I spend that way (as I heard you cant get an up to date balance on it from the machine?)

we are using $1000 in tc that we bought last year, I havnt seen an expire date on the tc.

We are also taking some dollar currency, I know I will need them straight away as dbf and dnieces will just NEED something as soon as they see it at the airport.

You can't get a balance, for the card, from the ATM but you can go online and get immediate, up to date details or give them a call on the international number :thumbsup2

thanks for the information, I am going to wait a bit longer to see if the exchange rate goes higher, the tc card is a good idea if you can get some free dollars.

we have always taken $ travellers cheques in $100 and $50 dinominations and say the meal or grocery bills comes to $70 or $40 they give you change in dollars so we nearly always have cash on us which is good.

haven't looked into the $cc

Amex Travellers cheque cards expire after three years.

Travellers cheques never expire.

Took both on holiday in February. Both have good and bad points. I like that with cheques you get your change in cash. The card is more convenient, but hard to keep track of funds, I kept all my receipts, but had my card declined at Walmart due to lack of funds, so I guess you can't over-spend. Also, you couldn't get a balance check at ATMs.

Prefer the old method.
