Hi all!
We are just back, had a Compact thru Dollar for 6 days for $164 (which was great..... and, yes, I initially said I was going to do Advantage, but when it came down to it, I couldn't take the risk).
I used my debit card for the transaction, and they did indeed hold $250 while I had the car (which I had expected). The line was quite short, the transaction was simple and I was defnitely not pressured into any of the upgrades/insurance/gps/stuffs.
The car itself was a silver Dodge Caliber with 38K miles on it - a little beaten up around the boot, but otherwise in good shape. It held a fantastic amount of luggage (since it's a hatchback), but was definitely a tight fit for 5 adults (which we knew going in).
It did NOT have power locks or windows, and insanely, the side mirrors had to be adjusted by hand by touching the actual mirror. It would have been a MASSIVE pain, had I not had a passenger to assist. (Sidenote with personal opinion sprinkled in - little wonder Chrysler had troubles if power mirrors is not standard - it just didn't seem SAFE!)
Hilariously, the cup holders had LED lighting, there was an external temp gauge (something I had to have added to my personal vehicle - Honda Element EX) and the glove box had a "COOLER" space for your beverages. I'm not sure how COOL it would be in there, but the AC was definitely diverting air to it!
All said, the car's own AC worked GREAT, cooling us down quickly even after it had sat in the hot sun (and it was HOT - over 90 every day), and it was an easy car to have on property.
Returning it to MCO was no problem, I had no issue with the scrapes and such on the back from luggage going in and out (not ours!), and my debit card has since been refunded the $250 and charged the $164.
In spite of the whole mirrors thing (which really did irritate the CRAP outta me... it's just not SAFE!), I will absolutely rent from Dollar again... they always have a fair price and it's always been a simple transaction.
