My DS5 (6 in November), has been asking for a baby doll for well over a year now. Last Christmas Santa gave him a kitchen set and tons of food, dishes, etc., as that was something else he was asking for. But he still is persistant in wanting a baby doll.

I have no problem getting a doll for him. The thing is, he really wants a Baby Alive. Of course I don't like the fact that she only says "mommy" (not "daddy")

Does anyone know of a baby doll that says "daddy"? Or have a suggestion for a doll your son/nephew/grandson/etc. really liked?

Thanks!

It drives me nuts how tough it is to find doll stuff for boys! Everything is pink!! We finally went with an infant boy Cabbage Patch Kid and also bought a Fisher Price Ocean Wonders (blue - yay!) 4-in-1 set to use with the doll that has a floor gym, baby carrier, and pack & play if I remember correctly. (It's wrapped for Christmas right now, so I can't check!)

This isn't precisely the same, but if you are anywhere near a http://www.friends2bmade.com/default.aspx...It's kind of like build a bear (owned by the same company) only you make dolls instead of bears. Most of the stuff is really girly, but there are 2 or 3 boy dolls, and a few different outfits to choose from. My DS made one when a friend (a girl) did one last year...and the employees were really sweet with him--picking out the cool outfit, etc. He named him for his best friend at school, and he still loves to play with him.

Thats the same doll i was going to say a Cabbage Patch doll.THey have plenty boys to choose from.

DS has a Cabbage Patch wearing swim trunks and he came with a little pail and shovel. We live at the beach so he was perfect for us.

If you're into hand-made fair-trade goods, there are dolls available at reasonable prices, like this one

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought about Cabbage Patch Kids, as I remember my brother having a boy doll when we were kids. But I can't seem to find a boy one he likes at stores I've looked at.
Guess I'll have to check online...:surfweb:

When my ds turned 5 last august, he asked for the AG bitty twins and we got him the blond and brunette boy. I love them! The quality was perfect and he enjoyed playing with them, with my dd and her bitty. HTH!

My four year old wants the new smaller Baby Alive because there is a boy one. He got a boy Cabbage Patch kid for his last birthday. He really likes it. My daughter has a doll by Berenger (I don't think I spelled it right). They are so adorable, and you can get them either non-sexed or anatomically correct! She has a little boy, and her brother has always liked that the doll looks like him ;) . Your son might like something like that instead of a doll with a semi-female "blank" area.

If he's asking for a Baby Alive I wouldn't substitute a doll that doesn't eat, poop, talk, etc. The action is probably what is interesting him. I'd probably get him the doll he wants. Does he know it only says Mommy? If it doesn't bother him, don't let it bother you!

By the way...we allowed my DS to be a PowerPuff girl for Halloween when he was 2. He loved that she could fly, had superpowers, etc. So I guess we are a bit more laid back than most when it comes to the gender stuff!

:goodvibes I would say to check out the American Girl Bitty Baby dolls at Americangirl.com. They have boy baby dolls and all the accessories to go with them. (i.e. boy clothes which are hard to find for other baby dolls).

Remember "My Buddy" dolls from "back in the day?" Too bad they are not still around...

The Twin boys from American Girl are sooooo cute! I wanted to get one (or two, actually) for my younger daughter, but she's not into it. Rats...

I just have to say that I am feeling so inadequate (but impressed!) since I read that poster who had a Christmas gift bought and wrapped already. ;)

DS, now 15, asked for the baby alive doll when he was 3 and that is what we got him. He named her Kaliope(:confused3 ) and he loved her so much. We had to buy her diapers at the grocery store and those little packs of baby food they eat. She did come in a pick outfit (he did not care) and she was his baby girl. He got her as a reward for having surgery and taking her along to the hospital was great, she got all the stuff done to her that he did and that made it alot better. If he asked for baby alive, that is what i would get. Cabbage patch are cute but I would be upset if I was expecting it to eat and poop and talk!!

Now please do not take this the wrong way as I never was gender selective at all and Ds had doll house and dolls and dishes as well as trains and trucks etc. but if he is in kindergarten, if he goes back to school after Christmas and tell the other children he got a doll for Christmas, he will get made fun of. VERY wrong but it will happen. Preschool, not an issue. Many little boys in our school, love the dolls. I would still get the doll but at least make him aware of the possible reaction from other children before he returns to school after christmas and role play how to handle it.

DS who loved his doll, is a loving and sensitive teen. He is wonderful with our DB and has no problem caring for him or sitting for our friends children.

Sorry got so long. Buy him the doll and teach him to be loving and caring with children.

DS just stuck his head in and remarked it never hurt him to have a doll.:thumbsup2

They have Diego dolls, in fact I think they have some on clearance at Target. They don't talk, though.

Check my sig...with a Dec. 1 due date, I'm getting EVERYTHING I can done early this year ;)

Thanks, everyone, for all of the suggestion!
I think we will probably go with the Baby Alive, since that is really what he wants, and I did find the boy version on Amazon. I'm totally cool with him having the doll (I'm a preschool teacher myself and know it is completely normal for little boys to play dress up and house, etc.), and I do think it teaches them to be more nurturing.
My only gripe is that the manufacturers have not yet figured out there are tons of little boys out there who love to play with babies as well, and there is not one that says "daddy". Oh well...:upsidedow

MSSANDRA - Thanks for the advice about talking with him and role playing before going back to school. This concern had entered my mind as well. DS has enough problems with his sensory issues to deal with, he certainly doesn't need the kids making fun of him for having a doll.:sad2:

How about the AG Bitty Twins - they have a blonde & brunette boy?

I'm getting these for my two DS this year for Christmas. I only wish they would have let me get three since I have triplets. No luck there.

One of my sons has a baby doll he took from his sister and dressed in one of his old ohio state sleepers. It is one of the softer more life like ones. Drives his grandma crazy. I don't care though if it makes him happy he has enough problems and it is not like he takes in public. ( He has CP and is 13). but he did find a nice outfit that fit perfectly with his room LOL he has had it for about 5-6 years

flip flop are you getting dd a bitty baby then or still going with bitty twin girls. My dd has dark and light hair twins from when they had short hair. She tried to get the long hair girls but daddy drew the line. Those are great idea for boys!
