Dole Whips

It's SO funny you say that because I was thinking "yeah, like Disney?" as I typed that out. I really just meant, we rent a house in a small town on the Windward side of the island, avoiding Waikiki if we can. Most things to do in Oahu are on the beaten path just due to the islands small size. It was our second week long trip, so we got most of the touristy things out of the way the first time around ;)

See, as someone who has lived in Oahu my whole life, those touristy thing are fun. I like taking the kids to Sea life Park and Dole plantation for the day! Even walking around Waikiki is fun because it's not something we do often

We were recently in Maui and I found an icecream shop in Lahaina that served Dole Whip just like at Disneyland with no lines. Needless to say, I made a stop there every day!

Yes, that would be Lappert's ice cream parlor in Lahaina. We discovered them last month and treated ourselves to a Dole Whip! Yum!

It was definitely worth the visit. I try to stay away from super touristy things, but I think the dolphin encounter is something my 4-year-old will never, ever forget. And who am I kidding? I got to hug/kiss a dolphin and it was freaking awesome!! HAHA

Nothing wrong with touristy stuff :) They tend to be popular for a reason. I just never went, because we never got around to going before I moved back to California.

Keva Juice in Sparks, Nevada.... also has them.
Not a fan of their smoothies, never tried their Dole Whips....... That is a Disneyland treat!

i can get dole whip at the menchies a mile from my house. they don't even look funny at me anymore when i pull cold cans of pineapple juice and straws out of my purse.

It's been about 8 years now, but we made them at home. A podcast I used to listen to posted a video showing where and how to make them at home using an ice cream maker. At the time the only place online that I could find the mix was Unified Enterprises Corp in Hawaii, but I see you can buy the mix on Amazon now. It took us a few tries to figure out how to get the right consistency. We served Dole Whips floats at my son's birthday party. It was a one time purchase since the mix was expensive and we decided it was a treat we wanted to save for vacation.

A commercial soft serve/frozen yogurt machine will get the most consistent results. I heard that some have tried using the Cuisiart home soft serve machine, which seems to get inconsistent results and stops working when the bowl warms up too much.

We used a 1.5 qt Cuisinart ice cream maker, which wasn't ideal but all we had. We found that we had to freeze not just the bowl, but everything we used to in mixing up the the mix, plus making sure the water was ice cold, before we finally ended up with something as close as we figured we'd get without a commercial machine. It was a fun week, tweaking our process a little every day. Each batch still tasted delicious even though the consistency varied.

I've heard it's possible to rent a commercial machine - maybe one on wheels or a smaller tabletop version. One place I saw charged maybe $300 for a whole day with maybe two mixes. I don't think it's cost-effective, but it's one of those things that can be done to impress party guests.

And maybe even buy a used commercial machine. I've seen some (claimed to be working) on eBay for a firm $1200.

They have Dole Whip at Raging Waters in San Jose, Ca. You can get it on an ice cream cone there, too.

Found the real thing at a little place called Nectar. I almost cried and I'm pretty sure an expletive came out but hey, we're both nursing summertime sore throats and a Dole Whip sounded amazing. We were told their other location served Orange Dole Whips but I have no desire to try it. Granted, sitting in Portlandia vs enjoying one in Disneyland isn't the same but I was happy to have it nonetheless!

If you do an Internet search, there are places that sell the mix to make it at home.

They are for sure available at the Dole Plantation, I had it there both times I was on Oahu earlier this year, and I believe they have them at Aulani as well.

When we dropped by Aulani, I asked the guy working the drink station at the pool and he said they weren't anywhere on the property :(

they have them at the lava shack in Aulani. It is by the water slides and a bit hidden. The machine has 3 options: always the dole whip flavor, and then they rotated the other flavor; chocolate, vanilla etc, and then finally the third option was a mix of both flavors. My kids thought it was hilarious that they could get chocolate dole whips!! My husband ate one everyday, he was in heaven.

Good to know but now I can't believe I was that close to a DW and didn't get one!

BTW, a tip for anyone getting one at the Dole plantation..
They stick a big spear of pineapple core (inedible) in the middle of it just to take up space. Order it without the spear to get your money's worth.
