Does anyone give their dog Rimadyl? If so, have you seen any side effects in your pet? We switched from the pill the dog had to swallow to the chewable tablet. Since then our dog has been licking, biting, and pulling off his nails. They're a discharge coming out from his nails and he's pulled off the nails on three of his toes.
We have a vet appointment today, but I'm just wondering if anyone's pet has experienced something like this.

Our dog has been off and on it for a few years and has never had a side affect. In fact he thinks they are a treat.

Good luck and hope your dog gets better. :dog2:

Sorry to hear about your dog! :dog:

Mine too has been on it for a couple of years, with no side effects.

Good luck!

I've had two totally different reactions.

My shepherd mix took it for a short period of time and was perfectly fine.

Another, the dalmatian, started it a couple years ago when her tail was dislocated. Three days into the medication I let her outside to go to the bathroom, couldn't find her and found her passed out in the bushes. 6 days of intensive care w/ fluids, etc and a HUGE bill and much stress later she came out of it. The scariest thing ever. Had all kinds of tests ran, etc and they determined it was a reaction to the medication.

After that I started doing some research on it and between what I read and her experience I will not use it for any of my animals again. I know it's helped a lot of dogs though so I guess it's a chance like anything else. :confused3

Geez, I'm not much help, sorry.

My dog had ACL surgery on Thursday and is on Rimadyl for pain. So far, no reactions. (I was hoping it would calm him down since he needs to stay off that leg for a few weeks, but he's as bonkers as ever).

Any suggestions on how to keep a crazy dog calm? :dog: :dog2: :paw:

My dog has been taking it for the past couple of years and so far no side effects. He also thinks that they are treats and I never have any problems having him take them.

I had a dog on it and it made her vomit alot and she'd pull her hair out with her teeth. She was at the very end though. :guilty:

My maltese has had no side affects. She has been taking this medication for several months, the chewable tab, for her luxating patella and arthritis.
I'm so sorry that your furbaby is experiencing this. I would definitely talk to your vet. Good luck. :paw:

Rimadyl can be toxic to the liver in suceptible dogs/breeds. I would stop it ASAP.

Our dog was on Rimadyl for arthritis. For 9 days it was a miracle drug. On the 10th day the most vile vomit came out of her I thought it was from the other end. Only after I called the vet did they think to mention the side effects of the drug. I would think long and hard before I gave it to another dog.

One of mine was given it after start knee surgery, he was fine at first then he started vomiting. I then read about the side affects. I wouldn't give it to either of my guys again.

Several of our dogs did fantastically with Rimadyl and were on if for years. It gave them several more years of active lives than they would have had without it.

Another one of our dogs had reactions to it, but he was a very old Rat Terrier and had been on it for at least three years. His problems were gastointestinal and liver related.

I haven't heard of the side effects that you have mentioned, but that doesn't mean it's not Rimadyl. I would go to the web site and scour the research on side effects. Either way, a trip to the vet is a must.

We knew our Baby was having pain in his hips so we did research on everything before we even went to the vet so we knew that if she recommended any medication we would be prepared. We did not like any of the side effects from Rimadyl and told our vet first off that we did not want to give it to him. She recommended Etogesic and he has done great with it. I hope this helps.
