We have spent the last three days getting the floors refinished, wrapping up most of the kitchen remodel. The floors included the kitchen, dining area, hallway, foyer and one bathroom so it produced a lot of dust and a lot of fumes. We use moisture cure polyurethane on the floors which is more volatile and odorous that regular polyurethane. It also takes a little longer to cure but when it does it is very hard and resistant to water and scratches. We boarded Connor for two of the days so he wouldn't be exposed to the chemicals. His nails are cut as short as they can be and I bought him booties, (which he takes off) so he won't scratch the floor while it is curing. Actually, as long as I call him to come with me room to room, or tell him where I am going, he doesn't ever run in the house. He only runs when he doesn't see me in order to find me. The groomer suggested nail caps and has ordered some. Has anyone here ever used them?

I've never used them, and I have hardwood floors. I've had two dogs, a 90 lb lab and my current dog, 110 lbs and growing, and never had a problem with scratches. I think that's an old wives tale made up by the floor refinishers. As long as you keep his nails short, there shouldn't be a problem, especially if you're using the product you named.

High heels cause more damage on hard wood floors.

I haven't used them either but I want to know if you have any photos yet :thumbsup2

of the kitchen..or Conner...???

While I'm sure the kitchen is gorgeous...I was just thinking yesterday, when the pool pics were posted of someone's dogs...that we hadn't seen pics of Conner, Hazel and Charlie lately...

Well, I was thinking of the kitchen but Conner is fine too. :lmao:

I don't have a dog, but the previous tenant here had two (little ones that ran all over the place when I was visiting to see if we wanted to live here), and there are no scratch marks on the floors (hardwood). There are on the lower kitchen cabinets, because they would stand up with front paws on the tops of the cabinets, but no marks on the floors.

The toe kicks, two missing cabinet doors, some grouting and some trim go on next week. On Wednesday the dining set, bar stools and wine fridge get delivered and then I will take pics. Thanks for asking. I will even throw in a picture of Connor.

I have had a couple of very superficial scratches over the years. Its more noticable on a high gloss finish. He goes to the groomer every six weeks so they trim his nails each time. Connor is tall and SKINNY! 44 pounds.

I was worried about scratches on our newly refinished floors but my groomer said as long as I keep the dogs nails cut down so that I don't hear them clicking on the floor when he walks then he won't scratch the floors.

Walking doesn't do it. Its me "vanishing" and the panic that ensues when I walk out of his sight. He digs his hind nails in I think to get "traction". If I tell him I am going to the store, etc. He goes to his crate. I brought the crate with me from his former home and its a "comfort thing", I don't shut the door. Its when I disappear. Since the floors have been done, I tell him, "lets go in the other room" and I walk a little slower than I usually do and he is fine. He just has mild separation anxiety.

Never saw toe caps...my only thing is if he pulled off the socks would he "work" toe caps off too and then swallow them and if so, could they hurt him by being ingested? You know, obstruction or something???

No, they would probably pass right through. They are small. The socks were not very secure under the best of circumstances. He probably could have shaken them off.

Congratulations on you new floors!

I think the toe caps are those plastic things people usually glue to a cats nails. yep, I just did a search and found nail caps on Doctors Foster and Smith. If I were you I would give it a try.

The first week we had our wood floors my DH was playing with our dog when the animal tore into the front room to get ahead of my husband in one of their playtime races. Well, once he hit the floor running he realized it wasn't carpet any more and had to really dig in deep to keep from sliding across the room. We now have a 3 feet of paw gashes that show exactly where things went south. They are in a spot we could cover with a runner but still not what we had in mind. Ahhh, animals and kids - the 2 most destructive forces on earth, good thing they are cute, gotta love 'em:rolleyes:
