Does anyone have dogs and hardwood floors? How do the floors hold up under dog paws/dog nails? What is involved in the upkeep?

We are considering purchasing a house with almost all hardwood floors. We have 4 pug dogs :o

We have hardwood floors and a labrador. I can't honestly say he does any damage to them. They weren't pristine when we got the dog but he hasn't hurt them at all.
It's a LOT easier to clean the hair off of than carpet.

We had hardwood floors in our home years ago and our dog didn't ever hurt them. Of course our floors weren't perfect to start with either but like Alex said, I don't believe our dog hurt them at all.

We have hardwood floors and a dog who doesn't like his nails clipped. Even his super long nails have not done any damage to the floors. In fact, the hardwood floors are so much easier to clean than carpet (the dog sheds a lot).

We have a St. Bernard and 5 DCherubs.....cherubs do more damage, lol!

My 6 year olds toys are harder on the floors than our 80 pound weimaraner!

I'd agree with the rest...dog nails no problem here....it's everything else that seems to cause damage!

For those of you with dogs who hate to have their nails clipped - try using a Dremel on them to "grind" them down. works wonders!!

Here's a link for info:

nail grinding

scroll to the bottom of the side menu and click on "How to Dremel dogs' nails"

If your dogs nails click, they are too long!!! Keep the nails trimed (dogs should have their nails trimed at least every two weeks), and it should not be a problem.

my dog's feet must have been deformed, b/c they made noise on our hardwood floors even right after we took him to have them cut. :p

This thread caught my eye because DW and I want to replace the vinyl floors in our kitchen and are currently trying to decide between wood floors or ceramic tile. Our dogs (2 chihuahuas and a toy poodle) spend much of the day there while we are at work. Because of their size, we don't think nails would be a factor. It's rare, but they do have occasional accidents, though. Are there any problems with urine or vomit on wood floors?

No problems. Just mop with Murphy's Oil Soap and warm water. Actually, small scratches on the hardwood often heal themselves. I don't know if that's the oil soap or what.

Hardwoods can be fun when you have two or more dogs that like to blitz. They're really good for skidding :p . (Reminds me of the toilet paper, or was it paper towel, commercial when the family calls the dog in for dinner. LOL)
