I need alittle help.

My DH and I are getting the kids a puppy for Christmas and I am a loss of what all I need to get for her.

Our last dog was put down 4 yrs ago and there hasn't been a puppy in our house for about 13yrs so I can't even remember some of the stuff they need.

She is just shy of 12 weeks (younger than what our last dog was when we adopted her), so what I need help with is the puppy needs of a lab.

My list so far:

Kennel
bedding for kennel
food and water bowl
food container
puppy food
collar
harness
leash
pee pads

What am I missing?
Can they, with puppy teeth, chew on Nylabones?

When we got our puppy years ago I didnt even know dogs lost their teeth lol. And did she chew! On everything!! I cant remember if I gave her a nylabone... but she definetly had chew bone. Just not sure if it was a nylabone. I lost a pair of sneakers in the whole deal:lmao:

How exciting though... enjoy your new puppy!;)

Congrats on the upcoming puppy adoption, I will be doing that in January, after the holidays. I have a 3 yo German Shepard and we just put my other dog 10 yo to sleep from cancer.

They have puppy teething rings and also if you somewhat freeze old washrags helps when they are teething.

What kind of pup are you getting? I am getting another husky. I like the big dogs

We never used 'pee pads'...felt they sent the wrong message. Also, didn't use a harness...way too hard to control a pup with one. The collar should be fine. Try to get an airline approved crate...closed up, with ventilation along the top of the sides. It gives a pup a lot of security in there. Get one that will be big enough for when the pup is full grown. While still a pup, get a box, or something similar, to put into the crate to make it smaller. That way the pup will be less inclined to soil while in the crate. As the pup grows, take out the divider and give the full crate area.
We give our dogs ice cubes to chew on. In fact, all my dogs come running when they hear the freezer door open...they love ice cubes!!! Cheap, don't make a mess, always available.

yes Nylabones are great for teething Labs. Make sure they are the hard rubber not the soft ones. They can chew right through the soft rubber ones. Labs are known for their chewing habits until they get there adult teeth so make sure you have plenty of toys and bones for the puppy to chew on. What color lab are you getting? Also labs are very smart and pick up on potty training very quickly.

We are getting another lab.
They are very good with kids and protect their families, though I used to say with our last one, she'd more likely bring a burglar a toy than alert us :lmao:

Thanks for the tip. I knew I needed to get chew toys cause I still remember all the stuff our last one chewed up. Still shaking my head about the travel alarm clock.

She a black lab and I hope potty training goes by quickly.

A brush
treats
shampoo (ear cleaner - all that stuff for baths)

Enjoy the pup. We have a black lab who is now 2 (pushing 2 1/2) and he still acts like a puppy.

I knew I forgot some of the basic stuff.

Thanks

Maybe a small stuffed animal or two to sleep with, esp if you're getting one from a breeder & it's used to it's littermates to sleep with/on. I've been watching the Shibu Ina puppies & knowing they're going to their new homes soon brought that to mind since usually they all sleep in a big pile.

I was gonna use rolled up old towels, that have our scents on them, for that since I still have young kids with their own stuffed animals and I know the puppy won't know the difference between theirs and hers. Especially if she decides to start thinking it's a chew toy

Brush (I second this one!!!)
Nail clippers
Dog bed (for the family room or bedroom)
Address tag (you'll need to get a license, of course, but these are extra)
Toys

How about a baby/puppy gate? Are you going to want to confine it to specific areas of the house? If it's going to spend a significant amount of time outside you might want to think about a doggy house...or if nothing else, an extra, heavy duty water dish just for outside usage.

Also, how about puppy training books, adult versions for you and kids versions for the little ones. You can never start too early.

Please dont flame me for this.
I would not ever think about using puppy pads for training a puppy.
They need to be going outside to use the bathroom and it does not take that long for them to be trained to do that. We got our dog when he was 5 weeks old and in no time he was trained and would not think about using the bathroom in the house.

My DSis has a dog and they used puppy pads with him and I swear it took them forever to get him trained to use them and then they had to train him to go outside so all in all it has took them about 6 years or so and I think that is crazy.

The puppy pads are expensive and then you have to put up with the smell which I personally cannot stand.

Thats a wise idea. They won't necessarily discern the difference between the ones they are allowed to have and those that are offf limits. Same goes for socks, shoes, etc. Mostly not a good idea to give the pup old ones, because they may decide those nice, new sneaks are fair game!

Sounds like you've got it all covered. I might add some little training treats.

I second this.

Also, plenty of chew toys and chewable treats for its little teeth.

And you need to make sure to keep it away from anything that can potentially become a chew or scratch toy! And that includes shoes, socks, furniture and everything with your scent on it, as a PP mentioned. Believe me, I had no idea of what puppies are able to chew, tear apart and destroy while using as a toy!

Good luck with the little one!
