Dog attack at the dog run!!

I'm truly saddened to hear about dog attack at FW. It is so unfortunate that some dog owners aren't considerate of others'. We own a 75 lb siberian husky and as much as we trust his actions, we can't determine how another dog might provoke him. I couldn't live with myself if I knew my dog attacked or injured a person or dog.

I know that camping is to be enjoyed by the entire family (including pets), but maybe the campfire, fresh air and cocktails, suck the common sense out of some people.

BTW ~ I walk along a wooded bike path and have come across a few coyotes and have never felt threatened. I've also come across many dogs along the same path and have been nipped at several times. Food for thought.

My dog is part lab, part shar pei and is feared by many. Other than his size though, I can't figure out why. He is much tamer than most poodles and chihuahuas out there. When faced with the fight or flight instinct. He will always flee. The only time I have ever seen him even show his teeth is when he is cornered. He used to tend to nip, but I broke that early before he was even 6 months. He has been attacked by poodles, chihuahuas, yorkies, and a neighbor's cocker spaniel. Each of these dogs he could easily swallow in one bite. Each time though, he cowered and backed off crying. The other owner's find it funny. I have to admit that it is funny as well seeing a little mop of a dog chase away my big brute. I just wonder the owner would find it hysterical if their dog meets a dog that would rather fight.

My Gibson is well behaved at dog parks. It took him a while to figure out dog language and learn what dogs wanted to be left alone. IMHO dogs that want to be left alone should not be brought to a dog park unless it is empty and then they should leave when someone else shows up.

Now, that said, if a man approaches me unexpectedly, Gibson goes after him like my life depends on it. He is becoming more discerning, but just won't let any man, other than my husband, within 5 ft of me. I am sure my dh likes it that way. He probably trained him that way considering he was deploying.

I do agree with FWGuy in that I would fight for him just like he would fight for me.

My daughter got a baby rooster for easter from her boyfriend a couple of years ago...the rooster was really cool, he'd follow the kids around in the back yard always quietly grumbling some kinda rooster noise. He would jump up and kick balls that were rolled in the yard, and my favorite part is he would really piss my neighbors off every morning just before sunrise. We live out of city limits, so theres no law that says we couldn't keep him, and it really infuriated my stuck up snooty neighbors.Anyway.....my the rooster decided that my scottish terrier was gonna be his hen. it was the funniest thing to see him chasing the dog around the yard and the dog hauling butt trying not to get violated, unfortunately...my rockin rooster got caught on the loosing end of a battle with a raccoon. I wasnt home when it happened, but I could tell from the trail of feathers and there placement that he put up a good fight.

As much as we enjoy our large german shepherd we do not subject zeus to other aggressive dogs no matter what the size. For camping we do not bring zeus to the fort but have a great dog resort that takes great care of him. As for people that leave yappers out, I would have no problems complaining to the main office at the Fort, and also about the agressive sharpei. Mamloya not complainig about yours but the person letting theirs run free.I'm sorry but I've seen too many people both young and old that think the rules do not apply to them. When my dog is out for a walk, I've my pooper scooper in the other hand and actually use it. I also do not let myself get into confrontations with other dogs and zeus. People forget that dogs are more than just posessions and yard ornaments.



Oh , that ankel nipper would get one shot at me before I kicked it into the next site.

Is the FW dog park divided with separate sections for big dogs and little dogs?

Our local one has a separate section for the under-20 pounders, and that works great. So anybody who brings a little dog in with the big kids knows what they're getting into.

My "killer" Dalmatian has a great time tormenting the little dogs thru the fence, but gets along wonderfully with all the dogs (of any size) on her side of the fence.

Maybe the FW dog park needs a divider fence. Good fences make good neighbors!

Rog - The rest of this story had me LMAO!!!

When I was about 17 or 18, I won a duckling at a local church fair. We had a bassett hound at the time that the duck imprinted on! That damned dog would tuck her tail between her legs, running as fast as she could to get away from the, maybe 2 oz, duckling!!! She also let out this pathetic whine while running! The duck (aka Mr. Peepers) kept right up with the bassett!!

When Mr. Peepers grew too large for me to keep, the Hungarian neighbors down the street offered to take him. That was okay with me at the time....uh.... until I found out that they ATE him!!!

I still have some cute pictures of Mr. Peepers with Al!!

You know a divider fence or separate sections would make sense from a safety standpoint. I would not put our two little Yorkies in an large open area with an unknown dog ... just too many unknowns there. We don't have a fenced yard at home so they are always on a lease, but we stayed at a KOA coming back this past Jan and they had a dog run that we used when it was empty and they did enjoy it. I think the thought is good, they just might need to look at the specific way they implemented it.

I couldn't agree with this more. My girl is like that. There's a couple of dogs she's bonded with and tolerates, but generally she'd rather be left alone. I have taken her to my local dog park when we've been at the park and seen that it's empty. My dog catches air when she runs so she's tons of fun to watch! Always though, if somebody else wants to come in I get her out and avoid the chance of putting unwanted stress on my girl and having it end in a confrontation. She's a little terrier who thinks big and I'm not taking the chance of her thinking she could defend herself against some of the bigger pups.

All of these dogs look like they would go after you ............... and lick you senseless!!!

We have never had a problem at the dog park. We have a 4 month old yellow lab and he loves everyone. There were a couple other dogs that were more aggressive, but the owners kept them on leashes.

I have never seen any Disney security or any type of monitoring at the dog park, which I find bizarre. They seem to be every where else.

We try to always know the mood of Rudy. He is a cute poma and kids love to run up to him. He is not a morning dog so we watch his mood so no one gets bit. In 5 years we never had a problem. I can say 1 thing about Rudy if he is on his leach he is more protective of Cheryl and I, but not leached has no problem with any other dog or people.

Not a bad idea, Deb. As far as cruelty, there would have been none. Given the choice between taking out an attacking dog or letting the Wonder Beagle get mauled, the attacker is gonna lose. The death would come quickly and without pain.

Next time you walk by ........pour the pooch a good size bowl of canola oil......

That dog will repaint the interior of that coach a few hours later......with no harm to the dog .......

Before the dog run opened several of us predicted this in the other thread. I hate to say I said so but "I said so."

My dog goes to the Fort with us every time but we'll never go to the dog run especially for the reason that started this thread. I like my dog and I like nice dogs but I did not always, I used to despise ALL dogs before my wife made me own one. 30 years ago I was attacked as a kid by a pit bull and that formed my dislike for dogs until about 12 years ago.

The dog run is a crazy idea for Fort Wilderness. Lots of people don't like dogs at all and many have a fear of them. They should not be subjected to them in such close proximity as the dog run brings them. Now adults AND kids that are not comfortable with dogs are forced to pass them on sidewalks in the common areas, not just pet loops. They also are forced to not let their kids use one of the best playgrounds and volleyball court at the Fort or let them play next to this problem that FW has started.

Don't fool yourself, Disney is not going to staff this area, they don't even properly staff the check-in lines or other areas. I used to be in the theme park business for 10 years and eight years of that was in management. I can tell you that if putting an employee at the park, even part time, was entered into the equation that they would have never built this thing.

I still say leave the pet loops as it was prior and fix the swamp trail....something everyone can enjoy.

Here's the problem, jason, you are a beacon of sound reasoning in a sea of Disney disjointed ideas. It is pretty apparent that Disney put little thought and/or planning into this project - it could be done cheaply and they figured it was wanted as a result of some survey results. I figure it was probably planned by someone who maybe didn't even own a pet. I'm with ya on the swamp trail idea, too. As far as "pet" projects - Disney should have saved their money on the pet playground and just enforced their pet rules already in existance.
