I really want DS to get a part time job. He only has two classes until the end of the year and I think it will do him a lot of good.

He got a call last night from a friend who works at a sporting goods store saying if he wants the job basically it is his. Now today he got a call from a shoe store that he applied to asking him to come in and fill out paperwork. I guess it means they want him but it is only for 40 hours during spring break week. He is going there now but really wants the other job because it is long term and pays $8.25/hr.

He doesn't want to accept the temp job and then maybe have to turn it down. I told him if he was offered the other job he could just call the temp job and tell them and they would understand as long as he let them no right away.

No, but she's been wanting a summer job since she was 12. She is now 14. Still too young........

So she volunteers at the library instead.

No, she spends too much time either doing homework or other school stuff.

But, she talked to the manager at a local pet store about having one for the summer if she doesn't get to go on her trip. He said she's hired as soon as she puts in an application.

They know us there. lol

My kids aren't teenagers anymore, but they both have had jobs since they were 16.

Our DD (17) works about 15-20 hours a week, usually two nights for 5 hours each and then Sat-Sun. Her school work has not suffered and she's paying her own car payment and part of her car insurance.

She works in the local pharmacy chain (my DH and I work for the same company, but at the corporate level).

She's not nuts about it, but it pays the bills and gives her spending money and experience.

The hardest part for her is dealing with rude customers! Sometimes she comes home in tears, but she's learning how to deal with it.

I'm a freshman in college and I babysit - I enjoy doing it and the pay is very good. I make $10-12 an hour here, plus meals and cab fare home, it's very nice.

I started working at 14 (summer after my freshman year) at a local real estate office.. answering phones, filing, taking messages, doing copies, etc...

When I was a teenage I work at Local baseball park in concessions as a runner.

Both DD & DS started working when they were 14yrs old. DD always did well in school & the job didnt interfer with her schoolwork.

As far as DS goes, I have to keep on him all the time to do his homework. I don't believe the job interfers at all. He would rather play his guitar or skateboard 24/7.

DS 17 worked as a host at a local chain resturant until track season hit full swing-the practices are long and meets are on Sat so we let him give it up-he will be getting another as soon as track ends. DS 13 umpires T-ball and minor league baseball games and will pursue and umpires license for baseball and softball as soon as he is 16-this pays very well and he makes more than his brother.

My daughter just turned 17 and has not had a "job" yet. She is very busy with her school work, volunteer tutoring, and all the clubs and sports at school. She recently started tutoring for pay which I know is tecnically a job, but it's still different than learning to deal with the public, reporting to a boss, etc. etc. I am happy she is making 15-20 an hour using the gift she has been given, but I still think there is learning from a job that she isn't getting. Maybe this summer....

Yes, DS has been working since he turned 16. He actually enjoys is and it pleases me because I don't have to give him any money.
