as regular plates?

My friend used to live in Illinois and she told me they encouraged people to "write" their own license plate (they like it to be something memorable for obvious reasons) and it costs the same as the regular plates. I was wondering if other states do this.

Kentucky does not, darnit.

I think CT does. I just paid $85 to renew mine; my mother and a friend paid the same and they have regular random number/letter plates.

Actually, in Illinois it is 5 or 10.00 more than the regular plates. Not a big difference, but a little for the extra time. We did it on our first car, but haven't since.

In PA it is $20 per personal plate, but we also get to keep our original plate. My DH and I both have vanity plates

Mine: WELVWDW
DH: NOYNING

california charges a fee each year (i think you pay it at the time the registration fees are due) and it varies depending on what type of vanity plate you've chosen. the 'plain' ones benefit the environment and seem to have the lowest renewal fee-the ones that benefit other groups seem to have higher renewal charges.

In Ohio it is $35 more a year to have one. I had one for about 3 or 4 years, and decided that cost was just too much for something like that.

Iowa has an initial charge for the vanity plates, most are $50, a few are more. Then each year there is a $5 fee tacked onto the registration.

We got personalized University of Iowa plates right after we got married. We were feeling flush with cash and had to wait at the DMV forever on a Saturday morning to get my new name on my license. Started looking through the book of vanity plates already issued and came up with 2 of our own.

It has actually come in very handy to have the UI plates. They are bright gold with black letters/numbers and are very easy to spot in a sea of white/light blue plates. DH and I have a knack for buying a popular vehicle model in a popular color, so this helps us find ours.

here in WV I pay $45 every year and all the vanity plates renew on Jan 1.

I used to have vanity plates here in NJ. I gave them up when Gov. Whitman's admin raised the transfer fee to $200. Not sure if it subsequently went down.

In IL if you get a vanity plate with a number in it it's $15 extra initially but nothing extra to renew. If you get a true vanity plate with no number then it's a lot more.

that explains a lot! I have seen so many Illinois plates with a name and then a number tacked on the end. Now I know why. :)

Actully, per the DMV website, it is $47 extra for vanity plates in Illinois the first year and then $13/year after that. So it is $78 + 13 =$91 for vanity plates. I think it went up when the Sec of State raised the plate fees a few years ago.
