Does Your DirecTV DVR Have a Mind of its Own?

We have had DirecTV for 10+ years and the DVR for maybe half that long. It seems to be going wonky. :( It will pause itself sometimes. It happens when it's on one channel for several hours, like right now I've got it set to one of the music channels (Malt Shop Oldies) and the music just stopped. I had to push the "play" button again.

And sometimes it will be on a channel and automatically change channels to record something, which I know it will do if two shows are being recorded at the same time as it has to be on one of them. But when only one show is being recorded I didn't think it needed to change channels. :confused3 If I'm watching something when it happens I just go back to previous channel, so I can watch, and it will still record the one show it's supposed to.

Maybe it's time for an updated DVR...

Does yours ever do funny things on its own?

My DVR in the bedroom refuses to stop recording Blues Clues. It's not listed as being recorded but it records every single day anyway. If I try to set it to record and then cancel it..nothing changes. Still records. I am going to be recording Blues Clues for life in there and I can not get that darn thing to stop!

We had a TiVo DVR (that we owned) that finally died after about 9 years and it started doing the same types of weird behaviors before it died. In fact, at about 7 years, we got a new hard drive for it - but it still only lasted a few more years after that and we had to replace it with a DirecTV one for now. We're waiting for the new TiVo DirecTV DVRs to come out- I thought it was supposed to be this year, but haven't seen anything yet.

Our Tivo DVR from Directv is acting weird but not sure if box or TV. At times it seems as if audio is behind motions, at times speech is garbled and dh claims it was running 30 min behind other night but I'm wondering if it wasn't him using rewind part or something. Tv is maybe a month old so really leaning towards box but It's royal pain in backside to switch boxes to c if box or Tv and since we r hoping to get new HD box soon just dealing with it.

We had a really old DVR (it still had the TiVO symbol) and every single time Direct TV would call or visit us about upgrading our system it would freak out after we told them no. Within five minutes of saying goodbye to the Direct TV representative it would change channels on it's own, freeze up and cancel recordings. A few days later it would go back to normal until the next phone call. After the second time I was pretty sure they wanted us to upgrade so we would have to extend our contract.

They finally had to give us a new system without forcing an extension on our contract because our system was no longer compatible with their programing. I'm glad we didn't fall for their scare tactics.

Check and see if someone has put a green thumbs up on Blue's Clues. Our old DVR would record shows that had thumbs up if it had nothing else to record at the time.

Also look and see if you have suggestions turned on. If you do it will record what it thinks you would like...don't ask me how it decides what you would like because I never could figure out what it was thinking with some of the stuff.

I don't even know what a thumbs up is..where would I find that? I would so love to get this to stop recording!

It depends on how old your system is but on our old remote there was a green button that had a thumbs up symbol on it and a red button that had a thumbs down symbol. When looking through the guide you could give a show up to three thumbs up or thumbs down. If the show had been given a thumbs up or a thumbs down it would show up when you pressed the info button.

It has been a long time since I had to turn off "record suggestions" but it was something I found in one of the settings menus.
