It’s homework time again (wait a minute… it’s always homework time for me ;) ). Anyway… I need to find people who work some place that there is a type of “employee of the month” recognition program, and I know that this has been mentioned in the past here. Is there any chance you work at such a place? :) If so, I would love if you’d help me out by answering the following questions for me, regardless of whether or not you’ve ever received it yourself. :)

1) In your opinion, what is the purpose that the program is supposed to achieve?
2) In your opinion, do you think that purpose is being achieved?
3) In your opinion, waht are the strong and the weak points of the program?

As much detail or opinions as you could give me would be great. Company names are not required, but if you could at least give me a short description of how the program works and if you ever received the recognition, that would be wonderful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance! I really appreciate any answers that you take the time to write out for me! The larger the “database” of answers I have, the better chance I have of doing well on the assignment we'll complete using the answers received. Thanks my DIS friends!!!

Just sent you a PM. I can elaborate if you like, just let me know.

I have been "Employee of the Month", every month for the past 4 years :bounce:

Of course I am self employed ;)

1) In your opinion, what is the purpose that the program is supposed to achieve?
It is supposed to encourage us to do our best at all times.

2) In your opinion, do you think that purpose is being achieved?
No.

3) In your opinion, waht are the strong and the weak points of the program?
Originally, a committee that did not have much interaction with any of the employees selected the Employee of the Month. Now they have switched to having all employees vote on who should be the current Employee of the Month.

Our program is not for the entire organization, only those under one VP. The more the program has progressed the better it has gotten. At first they did not go into much of an explanation of why the person was selected. Now that we have a monthly newsletter they go into a little detail as to why that person was selected.

Last year I was selected when we were doing a lot of work on a data conversion. It was nice, but it would have been better for me if my supervisors would just take the time to tell me that they think I'm doing a good job. A little bit of personal interaction would be good.

Did any of that make sense? I sure hope so. If you need more clarification or more info just let me know. (I am sick today and I don't think my brain is working very well!!!)

Thanks! Especially Chell and Debbie for your answers, I appreciate that a lot. Thank you! :)

Anyone else out there by chance this Monday night who has ever worked somewhere with a program like this???

We have an employee of the month program.

I believe it the program is supposed to give recognition to people who do the "grunt work." It is a method to make workers feel more valued. They receive a monetary award and some other perks, such as the special parking spot.

I don't know if the program achieves its purpose. The way it works is that each department or division takes turns choosing the employee of the month. The criteria appears to be different for each division (basically, they pick whoever they want).

Recently I was having some trouble with a certain employee. When asked to provide information, she either couldn't do it, did it wrong, or took so long it was no longer relevant.

The next month she was "employee of the month."

This made the award seem like a sham to me. I think supervisors must be very careful with these programs so they don't appear to be patronizing employees. I think I would rather hear praise directly from my supervisor, along with a raise. I don't really care if the whole company knows I received an award.
