DD-8 just switched from a private uniform-wearing school to a public non-uniform wearing school. I MISS UNIFORMS! I always wanted DD to wear uniforms. It was very helpful not having to worry about how to dress her (or worrying that her classmates would tease her for what she had on). Now, I have to decide every day what outfit to "put together" for her. I'm in South Jersey and right across the bridge in Philly, they have uniforms in their public school. Just wondering if anyone else does.

Some of ours do-- DD's doesn't but I wouldn't mind of they did. It is a school by school decision here.

DS just started kindergarten at a child care center. some kids come for before and after care if they go to another Kindergarten. I think the little girls and boys in uniforms look so nice - i wish all schools would require them.

My DD (5) school has to wear Uniform shorts Blue or Tan only. And they can wear any shirt as long as it has sleeves.

My 2 DD's do, they can wear tan or navy pants, skirts, jumpers, shorts, and skorts. Shirts are collared navy, white, tan, or burgandy, school t-shirls or DARE t-shirts. I totally aprove of the uniforms, however sometime the sneakers can be an issue. I'm ok w/the no lights, bright colors, etc but my daughter had one teacher say that because the nike swish had lt and dark blue they weren't acceptable - please! I told her if she says anything else to call me and we will stand outside after school and count the "unacceptable" shoes (rant over). Anyways just my 2 cents!

Some of our public shcools has uniforms.

Almost all of our public schools here in Chicago require uniforms and I love them. DDs' school requires navy pants, shorts, skirt or jumper with a light blue collared shirt. As others have said, it takes the guesswork out and I don't have to worry about the other kids teasing because they're not a the height of fashion.

Which district across the bridge? I am across the bridge as well, and they don't have uniforms (yet).

We're in the Chicago suburbs (west) and most public schools here do not have uniforms.

No, no uniforms here in NY...the reason I don't have her in private school is that I don't like the whole uniform thing..if public school had them I would have put her into private school since she would have had to wear them either way. For boys they are fine but to force girls to wear skirts while boys can wear pants is where I have a problem!

All of our district schools have them here. Tan pants/shorts/skirts and navy blue shirts. Girls can wear pants and shorts over here though. I LOVE uniforms!!!

They tried to do that in our elementary school years back but it didn't fly. Because it is a public school, they could never make it mandatory, just optional. There were plenty that would have loved uniforms but thought it silly that you didn't have to. So that would have meant quite a few kids getting to wear what they wanted while others had uniforms. To me the word uniform means EVERYONE wears the same thing. It would have been nice if they could have made it mandatory but it didn't so we never went through with it.

CindyB, the Philly public schools all have mandatory uniforms (for about 2-3 years now)

Iknew about Philly, I thought it was a S. Jersey suburb. I think Camden and Pennsauken (I may be wrong about Pennsauken) have uniforms.

Cherry HIll doesn't. Moorestown doesn't. Maple Shade doesn't.

I think Burlington City might.

Some of the school districts might as well wear uniforms. The list of what not to wear is so long most parents are frustrated.

Our school district WAS one of those, but I guess after a few years they finally decided tolisten to the parents. Last year, ds could only wear solid red, white, or blues shirts with blue, black or khaki pants (jeans were fine). If there was any logo on the clothing it could be no bigger then...I forgot the exact measurement.

Last year the school district was really bad about sending kids home for untucked shirts and no name badges (the kids have picture IDs that are part of thier "uniform"). They aren't so strict with elementary grades.

I'm glad they did away with all that this year.

The school district next to us should just come out and say the ONLY thinkg a kid can wear is Dockers and Polo shirts, but they just have a huge list of what can't be worn. The first week of school the kids were being sent home for wearing cargo pants/shorts. Appearently, they have too many pockets, but this isn't mentioned in the handbook...the superindendant just decided to add it. And then blamed parents for "not asking the right questions" about the dres code. Parents were mad. The editorial section of the newspaper was filled with angry letters.
