My dd's friend is allowed to have a boyfriend. They go to movies, exchange gifts I.M. each other and call each other on the phone. I do not allow my daughter to have a boyfriend or wear make up or wear large hoop earrings. So what's your thoughts?

Well my 5th grader is now a 10th grader, but back then she did not "date". ;)

My daughter is only 6 but she will not date until she is 16. That was my Moms rule (I hated!)but I'm glad she did it. I could talk on the phone to boys and call them my boyfriend. I hate how girls are growing up so fast now!! Haven't thought about makeup and earrings yet.......

UM....No. She's in 7th, and it is still NO. Dating that early leads to nothing but trouble. Seen it over and over when I taught middle school.

Sorry - no way! There's plenty of time for all that...5th grade is way too young!

If "having a boyfriend" was just talking on the phone, IMing each other, writing notes & possibly meeting at school functions (ie large groups) I'd probably be okay with it in 7th or 8th.

Ummm...my DD is 15 and a freshman in H.S. and she doesn't date yet. So there's no way my 5th grader would be allowed to.

Sounds like you are doing a great job & the other girl's parents need to have their heads examined!

I have a 5th grader and she thinks boys are ICK!

We're enjoying it while it lasts. :)

Nope, my 5th grade DD doesn't date. In fact, she seems to have only the mildest interest in boys at all!

i've got 3 girls -oldest in 3rd- I only hope they are thinking that way....UNTIL THEY ARE 30!!!!

Well, I have a DS13 that had a "girlfriend" all through 4th and most of 5th grade. They were more like buddies though. We used to take them to the movies and she came with us to a baseball game and out to dinner for his birthday. Like I said though, they were more like buddies...nothing really boy/girl about it.

Thanks for the replies. My dd has had a long friendship with this girl. It looks like their paths may be taking different directions. I guess my dd is not cool enough.

My DD is now a senior. But NO she did not DATE in the 5th grade! DS did not either!! I think that is ridiculous.

well my first "boyfriend" was in 5th grade! But we talked on the phone (not in school though :confused3 ). We went to the movies ONCE with my mom step dad and step brother. He and my step brother ended up talking the whole time. I broke up with him shortly after that :p

Needless to say...it was deffinitely not even close to "dating" and he wasn't even really my boyfriend.

i think i had my first "boyfriend" in 8th grade..and that was pretty much IMing, calling, holding hands, and a dance..tons of fun...
so no, my dad would have killed me if i dated in 5th grade ---heck, sometimes i think he doesnt want me dating NOW! :)

No, my 5th grader does not date, nor is she allowed to. She is the youngest and the older 2 did not either. It is one thing if they 'like' someone, but dating...I don't think so. I have been around too many middle school kids who ended up with an unplanned pregnancy and/or STDs to encourage romantic relationships that young.

I totally agree with PAW. My 5th grader isn't allowed to date, but she still has no interest in boys.

I know of a 12 year old girl that is 5 months pregnant. She comes from a not so good family that one of my good friends mentors. Very sad. :sad2:

No way!! My dd is in 6th and it still is too young. She'll date when she is 16 (maybe)

Yes, mine too.

Except for one boy who is her friend (but no she never talks/sees/associates with him outside of school!)

She even hides her face and goes EWWWW whenever there is kissing on any show, etc... :rotfl: As it should be, don't the boys still have cooties in 5th grade? ;)
