Does Water Aerobics Really Work?

I just got the Wii Fit and want to shed the 40 pounds that I am over weight.

I have a pool in the backyard and was thinking I could try water aerobics. Has anyone lost weight doing this? I hate to excersise and more so I hate to sweat. If this works it would be great!

So, anyone ever lost alot of weight in the water?

Deb

Water aerobics are great for cardio but not for fat loss. I remember Covert Bailey saying you have to actually be supporting you own weight (running, walking, step aerobics, etc) to lose the weight.

For myself, I was swimming a mile 2-3 times a week and while I got my heart rate down to 63/bpm I didn't lose much weight.

I am interested in the Wii fit and if people actually use it and lose weight. DD wants one and is working and saving for one and I think the Wii fit will be something I buy to go with it.

Well, that can't be true. You burn calories through exercise. Maybe there are more efficeint ways to lose fat, but no matter how you look at it, burning more calories than you take in will eventually lead to weight / fat loss. So, I'm saying it depends on how much you do in water aerobics, and how hard the intensity is.

BTW, at the onset of exercise, many people do not lose wieght. That is because at FIRST some people's fat converts to muscle, which weighs more than fat.... but after the transition, the extra weight goes away as long as you eat well, and continue to work out.

Best of luck to the OP!

AS a water aerobics teacher, YES! I teach pilates, deep water walking & a medium imapct shallow water class. Like all excercises, it does take time to get moving and to learn all the things you need to do.

I have been told (no documentation on it though I learned it at the Y I am at) that 30 minutes of continous movement in the water, even walking, is like being 1 hour on a tread mill. It pertains to the resistance of the water. And how much you put into to it, of course. It is funny that you can "sweat" in the water, when you are starting out. But it does get easier as you go along and like regular land excercise, change up what you do!

Not to lose weight, but I had to have knee surgery a few years back and the PT recommended water walking, which is basically just walking swiftly through chest high water. My legs got so well toned doing this. It's boring, but it works.

I think I'm going to go out and buy some of the equipment that goes with water aerobics.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

If I can loose 20lbs that would be great!
