does verizon cell phones cover Playa del Carmen, Mexico?

and if not could I pay for an upgrade?? My ds is going with another family right after Thanksgiving for a 1 week stay so I would love it if I could get in touch with him (he's 17) to see how he is doing. any info would be greatly appreciated !!

I would call and ask them. My husband had to get some kind of code to punch in on his phone when he was working in StCroix.(But this was 5 years ago things could have changed by now)

The verizon wireless website will tell you if the phone will work. If not they have a global travel phone available for $9.99 and you have it for a month. You must return it within 30 days. All you do is switch over your phone to the travel phone. Real easy.

He should be able to text for 50 cents a text (assuming you have a cell phone) but you would need to call Verizon before he leaves and set up international roaming which only takes them a minute...but that would also require some trust that he wouldn't go crazy texting his friends otherwise your cell phone bill would add up quickly.

I'm sure he could also get an international calling card while he's there also but as the pp mentioned, you might want to call Verizon and see if you can get set up with a temporary global phone (never done that before myself...when I was in Belize in April I just used my regular cell phone and texted).
