Does this sound right (rental taxes)?

We booked a car through Southwest for a 16 day trip last May/June, and I just got my credit card statement. My confirmation rate was $358, but $486 was charged to my credit card. I know the taxes and fees add a lot to the rental price, but this equals 36% of the base rate! Is that about right? Trying to find out before I call Dollar. We did return the car with a full tank of gas. Diana

I don't know the exact break down for all the car rental taxes ( if you go on the Dollar web site, they will tell you) but it is ridiculous. There are lots of extra taxes and by the time you finish you do add a lot to your bill. There's a state tax, plus some other type of taxes that you really can't get around. Thank goodness for Mousesaver!

I finally found the receipt (lots of receipts from that trip). Yep, it was all kinds of taxes. Just paid for a Priceline reserved car, it only worked out to about 29% in extra fees/taxes. Guess that's a reason to go with Priceline too. Diana

Taxes will be higher for a higher priced base rental.
Priceline rentals charge the same taxes as the ones you make yourself.
It runs about 30% over the base rate.

In the OP's case I would call Dollar ASAP or read the rental receipt and see what is up. This is a bit excessive.

I checked my National Car Rental confirmation and it gives the breakdown of charges in Florida on a rental car. Maybe it will help you to see if yours were excessive or not.

Charges are as follows:

Concession Fee Recovery Charge 9.8%
Florida Schrg/tire&bat fee $2.05 Usd/day
License Recoupment Fee .49 Usd/day
State Tax 6.50%

I'm not sure if these are charged on the base rate or on the rate after discounts (if any). These charges are for a car rented for October.

Hope this helps.

Sounds a little high, may guess is they charged you for gas or an extra driver.

When adding in all the extra fees remember that sales tax is added to the base rate plus all the additional fees.

Example:

Rental 250.00 7 Days
Concession Fee 9.8% 24.50
Florida Surcharge 2.05% 5.12
License Fee .49 3.43

SUBTOTAL 283.05
State Tax 6.5% 18.40

GRAND TOTAL 301.45
