Does this qualify?

I just found out yesterday that my son has a double ear infection and is going to be taking penicillin for the next 10 days. I have heard people say that you can get a fridge for free with medical reasons... would penicillin qualify?? Or should I not even bother asking?? I don't want the Poly to think I'm trying to get something for free, because I will gladly just pay the fee.

Thanks :)

It qualifies if you ask me! ;)

I'm going to move this over to the Disability board - threy would have more info there I think!

I'd ask, all they can do is say yes or no. It certainly qualifies to my mind.
You might also want to ask the pharmacy if it needs to be refrigerated for quality or for taste. For example, some types of Penicillin need refrigeration, but some (Amoxicillin, for example) are refrigerated to help cover up the bitter taste.
If you know that the refrigeration is for taste, you can still ask for a frig at no cost, but you would have other options if they say no.

For doses at the parks, you can bring medications to First Aid in any of the parks for storage in the refrigerator.

Double ear infection?

Is that 2 infections in one ear? or 1 infection in 2 ears? or 2 infections in 2 ears? lol

poor kid... is the medication the liquid? I think they will comp. you a fridge for that... good luck, hope it clears up fast. Rotten to be sick on Holiday.

>>^..^<<

One thing you should do is contact WDW "Special Reservations" at 407-939-7807 and explain the medical necessity of a refrigerator. Normally if the request comes from them to the reservations system there will be no charge; simply asking at the hotel or regular reservations they will tell you there is a $10.00 daily charge regardless

Hmmmm... I'm not sure, the pharmacist said it must be refrigerated, so I just assumed it was for freshness. The name of the drug is Keflex. I'll call tomorrow and ask. I don't think we'll have to worry about taking it to the park. He takes one dropper twice a day so I've been doing it when he wakes up and before he goes to bed.

Double ear infection just means both of his ears are infected.

Are you flying? Years back DS had an ear infection and we were due to fly. The doctor said not to fly until DS had so many days of the medicine. I hope DS responds quickly to the meds. PD to you for a great trip.

even going thru Special Reservations is not a guarantee that the fee will be waived for medical need, but it certainly is a good idea. Some people who did go thru them in the past posted that they were told Special Reservations could arrange for the frig, but not waive the cost. Others have had the cost waived.
I guess it depends on which way the wind is blowing.
I don't know the answer about Keflex, but your pharmacist will either know the answer right away or be able to look it up for you.
Good luck on your trip.

I suspect you won't have trouble at the Polynesian these days if you explain the situation and are nice and not demanding as I'm sure you won't be. They will even refrigerate it for you until your room is ready....they've done this many times for us with insulin. We have a medicool pack for it but with the FL sun I never want to take a chance with it and I don't want to tote it aound all day.

I hope your son feels better quickly and that you have a magical vacation. Glad you're giving the Poly a try!:D

This probably won't help you since you've filled your prescription but for others .... Many antibiotics come in the fast melt tablets. Severl yrs ago DS came down with an infection right before we were to leave on a family vacation. I spoke with the Dr and she found a chewable he could take. I always asked for it form then on. about 10 yrs later when DD was about 3 she also developed an ear infection right before the "same" vacation (to visit DH's family) the antibiotics are now in the fast melt form instead of the hard chewables

Thanks for the info, I had no idea it could be available in a chewable form. That's great! :) It probably wouldn't have helped me this time, since ds is only one, but I'll keep that in mind for future trips. :)

Oh, by the way, they did not charge us for the fridge. :)

Thanks for reporting back. Hope you had a good trip.

I think the fast melting ones would be ok for a 1yr old. They really disolve as soon as any moisture hits them. The only problem would be the strength. She was actually just under the weight for the smallest dose, but was still in what was considered safe. I think the smallest dose is for 30lbs. DD weighted 281/2 at the time.
Glad to hear they didn't charge you.

Another optoin for anyone reading this is a small portable electric cooler. This would be especially good if one were driving and needed to keep meds cold on the road. Most plug into the car and have an electrical outlet adapter.

We ended up packing the medication in a bottle bag with those blue freezer packs. It fit perfectly and stayed cold all day. :) Once we got to the hotel we just popped the packs into the freezer and re-freezed them for the plane ride home and kept the medicine in the fridge.
