Does this make sense? RO & MYW reservations

Does having a room only reservation and also a magic your way package reservation at the same time make sense for this reasoning? RO in case a room discount pops up before Aug 2020 and a MYW package in case a deal comes up like Kid-sized summer or free dining(yes that's a stretch). I know WDW is holding on to my money in both cases, but if it secures me a room at my desired resort while waiting for the discounts to come out, I'm okay with it. Or is this a dumb plan? I've only ever booked two of my own WDW vacations before, so I appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

You can apply a room discount to a package, so if you need tickets (and want the DDP), you can keep just the package and apply any discount that comes out later (pending availability). The discount would be applied to the room portion only, but can be applied to a package reservation.

It doesn't matter if you have an existing reservation when a discount comes out. You can only apply discounts if your resort/room category is placed in the discount inventory for the dates you are going. If you are going regardless, book what you want now. If you are only going if a discount comes out, there is no advantage to having a reservation now. The one advantage of booking a package now so far in advance is, if WDW raises ticket prices between now and your travel dates (or room or dining rates), as long as you don't change anything, you have locked in today's prices.

This is exactly what I wanted to know - I can apply a room only discount to my package. Thank you for your response.

I guess @mickeynut1's response made sense in that I didn't know I could apply a room only discount to a package that I currently have, in the event one comes out. I appreciate your point that booking now locks in the current pricing. To be honest, I would wind up cancelling my vacation if there wasn't any room discount offered in the end, or instead choosing another resort that has the offer.

Thank you for your reply.
