Ok this is totally random but sort of annoys me.....the other day I was talking to someone and when I told them that I was from Massachusetts they said "Funny you don't sound like you're from Boston!" I'm not from Boston...I grew up in Western Mass...no where near Boston!!! Not everyone who lives in Massachusetts lives in Boston nor do they talk like they are from Boston!!! Does this happen to anyone else? Not just those from Massachusetts but for where ever you are from?

No, but I have been told by other Texans that I have a Texas accent.

Oh yes. I have lived my entire life in New York (the state, not the city). I don't have a New Yawk accent, and that seems to confuse alot of people. I have been told I have a Buffalo accent, but I'm not sure what that is. I think I sound like all the normal sounding actors on TV shows.

I live in Kansas City, MISSOURI and whenever I travel outside of the midwest, everyone asks me how it is in KANSAS and then makes some Wizard of OZ or farming reference. I then try to explain that I haven't lived in Kansas City, KS for 30+ years (I was born on the Kansas side). Boy, that gets some weird looks!

For the record, there is a Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas, but the majority of the city is on the MO side of the state line.

Im from "Boston" but I have never lived in Boston. Anytime that I travel out of MA, people here the accent and say, "Are you from Boston?" I just say yes. I think that it's pretty funny!

Well, I was born and raised in RI.....throughout my school years when asked where I was from, I'd tell people RI. People would say I sounded like I was from NY and then ask if RI was near NY.

i get confused looks. i live in new york about 100 miles outside of NYC. alot of people have that NYC accent around here. i dont. i am not from new york. i am actually from north carolina but i lived most of my teenage and early early adult life in ohio. so i really confuse people. i only have a half southern accent. only some things come out weird. and i am the only one around here that says ya'll properly.

I agree with grinningghost. I live outside of Buffalo too and people assume all "New Yorkers" have the stereotypical "accent". I think the "buffalo accent" is more a midwestern type. My DS moved to NC 5 yrs ago and now she has a southern drawl...........
If you tell her that though she says no way.... I guess the "accent" is in the eye of the beholder??

I'm with TIdoublegaER but I do live in Kansas. I was born in Northern Kansas but I have lived in Southern Kansas for the past 25 or so years. In southern Kansas we do have a slight southern twang. I have an Aunt that was also born here in Kansas and she now lives in Philadelphia, you would never be able to tell by listening to her that she was born in the midwest. It is so funny to listen to her.

I grew up in Blackstone, MA ---it's on the RI border, right next to Woonsocket, RI.

When I went to college in Worcester, MA people asked where I was from. ??? It's only 30 miles away (IF THAT!) I guess the French / RI accent through them for a loop. I still work in Central MA & am asked where I'm from.

TRUST ME --- I don't have a French accent!!! AT ALL!!! Now my mom & aunts certainly do. But me - NO! (But I can do a REAL good imitation. LOL)

I was born and raised in Spain, everyone still insists that I'm German and when I say I'm Spanish they think I'm telling a lie.
The real kick for me was when I was having dinner at the Biergarten in Epcot and the CM started talking to me in German, I understood what she said because I grew up spending my summers with my uncle and his friend ( who is German ) and he's always been like an uncle to me. I guess he really rubbed off on me, LOL.
I told the CM that I was not German and she said she thought I was.

My hubby and I lived in Springfield, MA for a while. Whenever we told people that we lived in MA, they would automatically assume that we lived in Boston and started asking questions about Boston...............

My DD#2 goes to school with a boy from Buffalo. When we first met him and his family I could have SWORN that they were from Ohio or Indiana.
I was so surprised when they told me that they all were born and raised in Buffalo NY.

I am so glad that I don't have an accent! ;) :p :D

Well, if you're from Pittsburgh (assuming you were born there), you WOULD have an accent! The way people from Pittsburgh say "blouse" and "house" is a dead giveaway.

And we moved from Rochester, NY (similar to the Buffalo accent) when our DD was 3 (14 years ago) and she was just beginning to call her Dad, "Deeeaaady" - LOL. Now she says "Floor-ida" and we say "Fla-rida" -- oh, well!

Our friends in Buffalo call me "Veil" (Val).

I've found that's true about the receiver thinking you have the accent -- the person with the accent doesn't seem to notice it!;)

Not born here FOJMO ;) . I was born about 100 miles north of here and there really is not accent there. So I can say that. :)

And actually, you CAN really tell that someone is from the CITY of Pittsburgh, because it has been my experience that most who are born and raised in the suburbs escape the "blahhse/hahhse" and the "dahn tahn" thing. :)

I've lived in Georgia my whole life. I've heard more often than not that I don't have a Georgian accent, it's not as thickly accented as it should be. That's what my SO tells me all the time . He makes me say white, light, etc. so he can make fun of how I say them. He thinks it's funny that I know the proper way to say tire (not tar), wire (not wor), etc. I don't think I have an accent, but I've been told by those non-southerners out in the world that I have a definate southern twang. I've also been told I sound like I'm from Alabama ( ).

My SIL is from MA (not from Boston though;) ). Her dad will purposely take on a Boston accent around me so he can hear me say "huh???" all the time.:teeth:

I moved to Florida from "Boston" when I was 11. Actually, we lived in Quincy (QuinZy), which is pretty close to Boston. My parents were born and raised in Southie.
When people ask where I am from originally, I say "Boston."
But I am amazed at how many people say they are from Boston and then when you ask where, they say some city or town that's nowhere near Boston.

Not very important, of course, but I think it's a little strange. ;)
I don't have much of an accent anymore, but it shows up every once in a while.
Mostly when I say, "Boston". :p

We were talking about this last night! It does happen to me. I have lived in Boston since the day I was born which was 32 years ago today:eek: ;) . I lived in Dorchester until I was 7 and have been in South Boston ever since. My mother was raised in Southie. Anyway, my brother said something last night and I just looked at him and said "You have the worst Boston accent I have ever heard!) Now he just looked at me because we probably sound the same. His girlfriend who is from RI but now lives in Brookline agreed that he definetly is worse than my husband and me and we actually don't sound too bad. I try to be aware of it but sometimes I guess I just can't help it. You should hear my family when we get together, it's terrible well maybe not terrible but it is funny ;)

Happy Birthday, Cinmell!

I LOVE Boston and miss it very much. I have relatives in Dorchester, Quincy, Duxbury and on the Cape.
My Dad lived right behind the Clam Shack on Wollaston Beach until he passed away 2 years ago.

I love the Boston accent too. :)

Thank you Montessori! I just drove by the Clam Box I mean Shack this morning. What part of the Cape are your relatives in? We are going to the Cape tomorrow for a weekend away and I can't wait!
