I'm trying to get people's opinion on the gigantic mural in the Contemporary lobby that you see from the monorail.

Do you think it's time they replace it?

My opinion is yes, it needs to be replaced. I think it dates the resort. I wish they would put a new one there with better colors. It is so unappealing to me. In fact, my dh does not want to stay there because he thinks it looks to 70's. But I would stay there-in fact I hope to someday.

Yes it looks very 1972'ish.

I hope they never change it.

It is considered a work of art (it's even signed), and there would be a lot of thought going on before they replace it, as it can't be removed without destroying it. I wouldn't put it past them to cover it up in some way (that could be removed later on if desired, not damaging the tiles), but I don't think they will remove it any time soon.

I hope they never change it either. It was designed by Mary Blair who was an amazing design artist. She worked on design concepts for several Disney movies including Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Cinderella. She also was the artist most responsible for the look and feel of It's a Small World. Sure the mural looks 1970s, but, at the same time, embodies the early years of Disney World to me.

I'm stepping off my soapbox now...:)

Here here, Charleston Princess. It's one of the last remnants of the murals that Blair designed for Disney parks/resorts and it should be preserved. A design can be contemporary and still incorporate elements of the past.

Of all the things that could be improved at WDW, this would be way down at the bottom of a very long list.

I'm with you! We stayed at CR in 1972 and that mural has some serious sentimental value! :)

Seriously, if there was ever talk about replacing the mural or covering it, I might have to chain myself to the monorail track at the Contemporary in protest :) .

That was a great post.:worship: Mainly because it was exactly what I was going to say! I've read into a few short things about the Mary Blair murals and artwork. It's a part of Disney history:wizard: Replacing it would be like replacing It's a Small World, the speedway, and Carousel of Progress because they 'date' the Magic Kingdom.

Nope, leave it alone. If ANYTHING, just touch up the paint a little to brighten up the colors - but don't mess with the design!!!!:cool1:

What's wrong with it the way it is now? :confused3 It's a gorgeous work of art. I'm not an 'artsy fartsy' type but I love looking at it every time I visit the Contemporary. If it was somehow changed i'd be one of the first in line to protest.

So what if it's the 70's? It's not like the mural has an 8-track tape deck in it. :lmao:

I for one...love the contemporary's retro-modern..."what the future should be-never was" vibe....Its so classic Disney!

When the CR was built it was a very cool futuristic style.........now it is a more a retro style and removing the mural will not change that. Nothing will change that the resort is dated, so it may as well embrace it's place in time.

I wouldn't mind seeing other things changed or updated, but I think the mural is actually one part that is creative and artistic and worth preserving.

I agree that it makes the resort lobby seem dated, and that's not good for a resort that is supposed to be "contemporary." The mural, however, is the work of Mary Blair and holds some artistic significance. Disney should find a way to remove it and preserve it for future generations.

Does anyone have a photo of the mural?

These are my photos but if you google Mary Blair Murals you will find lots of photos of her works.
