Does the DME take mobility devices?

I am in the process of buying myself a lightweight scooter to use locally, but hubby thinks I should bring it to the US instead of paying over $200 to hire one. I'm talking about something in the size/power range of the Victory Go Go Traveller Elite (as that is the nearest equivalent to what I'm looking to get).

We have made enquiries of Virgin Atlantic, who are sufficiently vague enough to not actually know whether the two I've short-listed are permitted (due to the battery size/power) and then it's my decision whether I want to risk being turned away at the gate on the day.

However, it occurred to me that I don't think the DME will accept mobility scooters, even if they're collapsable/break-down-able.

Has any one actually been allowed to take one on board? If not, then that is a 'double whammy' and means I'll just go ahead and hire one and not have the stress about having to get it and our luggage to the airport, onto the plane, off the plane, through Immigration at MCO and then to the hotel. And then, of course, doing it all in reverse on our way back.

Magical Express can take mobility devices. If you would like to remain seated on your device, call to note your reservation as needing an accessible bus. Or you may put it into the cargo hold if you are able to manage the stairs and walk onto the bus.

Enjoy your vacation!

If you chose to put your mobility device in the cargo area, you do not need to use the stairs. You can transfer to their wheelchair, ride a lift and stay in the wheelchair for your ride to the resort and back.

Thanks, but luckily I can manage 4 or 5 steps - even though they are quite steep! What I don't like is having to struggle right to the back of the bus when it's already full because I can't use the new 'reserved' seats at the front!

We bought and tried to use the smaller gogo elite traveler inside the parks several years back. The problem we ran into was the battery lasted 1/2 day about 5-6 hours in the parks. We found ourselves pushing it to outlets constantly. It was also an extremely rough ride and I was sore at the end of the day. It was damaged on the return trip home in the cargo area of the plane. The airline paid for the repair, but it was a total inconvenience having to transport myself and the non working scooter from the airport to my house. Plus the month it took to go threw the process of getting it fixed. We have been rent the larger Victory and Maxima scooters now from a local company in the Orlando area for $180 a week. Battery lasts 12-14 hours for us. It's best money spent, and if something happens it their problem not mine.

True, but you will need to call in advance to request an accessible bus or the one waiting/scheduled may not have a lift.

Enjoy your vacation!
