Does Southwest Offer Credit If Price Goes Down?

Just to clarify -

It's been a while since have flown Southwest. Are you saying that if I book a round trip ticket, and the fare went down for one of the flights, I would only have to change the flight that is reduced and not cancel the entire trip in order to get the reduced fare?

In the past, I would book two one way flights (one outbound and one inbound) in case the fares on one of the flights went down. Then I would cancel and rebook the flight with the lower fare. This way I did not risk paying more for the other flight if it had gone up in price.

you just open your account with flights listed. Select the one you want to change. Select the same flight (or different one) at lower price and click complete. You will get a page showing the new price and credit. Just remember that you will have to click complete a second time on this page. I almost missed that button. Very easy of course it seemed too easy to me and I kept trying to look for a catch before I would try it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. I saw earlier today that my January flights had gone down $25 each way. I wondered if you could do this. I now have a $51 credit with Southwest. This is me now. I love saving $$$$, but only thought that happened on the budget board.

Now, what to do with the credit?

I found the answer. I called Southwest. The customer service desk put the lower price through for me, so I have a credit now. She said they were having computer problems which is why the lower price wasn't showing for me.

Also, I located the Travel Tools link. It's at the bottom now. Last time I used that feature ( a few years ago), it was on the top half of the page.

Interesting. Do you need to book the credit within a yeAr of the original booking or travel within a year?

Yes this is still how it's done. I did it this morning and got an $80 credit (4x$20) on my return flights for my upcoming trip and yesterday I got a $62 credit (2x$31) for the return flights for my family members flying in from another city.

The link to make the change is under Travel Tools, Change Air Reservation. You'll be shown your current itinerary and you'll select the flight you wish to change. As already pointed out, you must make sure you click the buttons to confirm at each step or else you won't complete the change.

Just remember that after January 28th, those credits will only be able to be used by the original ticket holders.

The only portion of the credit you'll personally be able to use is the portion credited for your own ticket. Other credits for individual family member's tickets will only be able to be used to rebook new tickets for those individual family members.

I'm trying to decide if I should get my DH to "surprise me" with a solo trip for SWW weekend. This "surprise" would be my Chanukah gift so my tickets would be purchased shortly. Gotta use these credits now. LOL

Yes. Book new flights by mid January in order to use you DS's fare credits for you and your DH. That doesn't mean you have fly by then. You just have to book new tickets using you son's leftover credits by then (mid January).

Just in case you're flying SW on your trip, check the rates, check the rates! Our flights on 11/30 (which have been blocked from their sales) just went down today.
