I worked for them a few months in marketing when they made the transition. They gave us a "mantra" to explain the reason they would not accept the credit cards anymore. In other words, the largest company in the world decided they'd rather inconvenience their customers than pay the fees. Sam's will tell you in a second that they make all of their money on membership and not a dime on the merchandise. They could care less if you bought one thing as long as you're a member.
