Does braces pain go away?

I know they say it does, but dd got braces put on today and the small wires at the end are causing her a lot of pain. She used some dental wax, it's helping but falls off. Any advice and how many days will she have pain?

Her teeth aren't even that bad, but we wanted to fix her bite mainly, and I'm wondering if this was worth it.

Is the wire poking her? Have you called the Ortho? Maybe they need to fix the wires a bit.

When my son first got his braces there was some discomfort for the first few days. It will go away but can seem like it's taking for ever. Our Ortho recommends giving them ibuprofen too instead of acetominophen.

Tell her to hang in there!

Kristen

I would call the Ortho..my daughter didn't have any pain from wires just soreness the next day.

Chewing Sugar Free Gum and sticking to Yogurt, Jello and Shakes helped me the most. The wax never did stay on very well but a lot of the time, I thought the wires were causing irritation but it turned out they weren't the culprit all the time. I thought that everyone was insane for suggesting gum because the last thing I wanted to do was chew, but it really did help speed up the process. I would recommend taking Advil or Tylenol in addition. Not a fun process but luckily the pain does go away and it goes away faster as the process goes on. :) Not fun at all. :(

The orthodontist can trim the wires back if they poke out too much. I know what a pain they are. Hope she feels better soon.

My ortho would kill me and my DD if he found out the she chewed gum. I have never heard of that.

Anyway, my DD had pain from her wire at first but then her gum toughened up and it didn't hurt. If it keeps up or Motrin doesn't help, I would call and make sure that there isn't something wrong with the wire.

My son's ortho told us he should chew gum, it would help with the pain. We had to make him chew it the first week because he's just not a gum kid most of the time. He even gave him a note to take to school so he could chew gum in his gum free school. All the orthos in this area write gum notes for school. One local ortho writes a gum note that's good for a week. My son's ortho wrote an unlimited note that he could use the whole year.

if the wires are poking, the pain will never go away and the wires need to be trimmed.

wow never heard of it, My ortho says no way, and people he is one of the best around, he comes highly recommended.

In fact if he catches you eating or chewing something that you shouldn't and you break a wire or he has to unstick sticky stuff, you are given one free time, after that he will tell you to find another ortho.

sound mean and cold, but he is the nicest most gentle ortho and dentist around, he is recommended by all the the pediatricians around here.

I guess just different schools of thought.

Echoing what others have said:

If the problem is that her lips are sore and feeling different because the brackets are now touching them, that's something to which she'll have to grow accustomed. Wax is like a band-aid to that problem.

On the other hand, if the big wire that connects the brackets together is too long at the back of her mouth and is poking her near her jaw-hinge, that means the wire was left too long. That will not go away, and if that's the problem, she needs to go back ASAP to have it trimmed away. Wax will not solve that problem.

Braces pain does go away after the first week or so... I've had mine on the the past 18 months and get them off in exactly a week and they don't bother me at all. Right now I'm just ready to get them off as I'm down to the one week mark :).

THat is what my daughter was having, the brackets were irritating her lips, it wasn't the wires.

Im towords the last bit of having braces in my experence so far.

When you first get them it is extremly painful the first couple months.

The middle not so bad sore for a day or two.

Towords the end when you have the ruber bands OUCH!

I have to agree that pain from braces goes on for some time. From spacers being put in, to sores on cheeks, and those darn rubber bands....!!!

I second taking some advil. May also want to try oral gel (like babies use when teething). Another helpful, but gross pieces of advice, is to swish mouth out with warm salt water.

I'd give it a day or two using all the methods everyone has asked. If she can still feel a poking wire, it will need to be trimmed.

Best of luck!

Mine never did. Just as it would ease, they'd make an adjustment. I hated braces. And for me it wasn't worth it...it was to prevent problems that would show up when I was 40 or some such nonsense as that. Was NOT worth the pain for me or the money for my mom!

Not ot mention, I had full band braces (where they have to shove the bands up onto your teeth, and the brackets were attached to the bands...not like now with the brackets glued to your teeth), and they left what I see as "scars". Horizontal lines that have just started showing up in the last 10 years in the spot where the bands were. (and I brushed multiple times a day, even at school, after EVERY meal)

DDs pain took about 5 days to go away the first time and lasts 1-2 days when they tighten them.
Milk shakes are good because the cold numbs things a bit as well as being soft.

As a teen in the US many moons ago I was told to chew asper gum for the pain (do they still make that?). They asked if I had laready had chicken pox (I had) and sais then it would be safe.

DD13 has braces here form one of the very best in the business (she has a complicated issue and we were referred to him as the only one who can handle it by several people). He told her to chew sugarless gum at least once a week to help clean the teeth even better:confused3 She hasn't lost a single bracket yet (she has had them about 8 months) and he purposely puts them on lose as he says it is too damaging to teeth to have them on tight, and if one falls off he will just replace it.

From the OP's post, it sounds like the wires are poking her mouth. If that's the case, see if the ortho can trim the wires so they don't poke anymore. If it's regular brace pain (hurts to put pressure on teeth), you'll just have to stick to soft and cold foods for about a week until it goes away.

My daughter has had braces for a year and a half now and the only time she has ever had any discomfort was the first day they went on- other than that she said they don't hurt in the least. I would take her back to the Ortho is something is rubbing or wires are sticking her- they can fix it.
As far as chewing gum-I would check with your ortho- chewing gum voids our contract with the orthodontist- TOTALLY against the rules....in fact I have never heard of anyones ortho that let them or even encouraged them to chew gum other than in this thread!

Our ortho also recommends chewing sugarless gum to help with the jaw pain.

DD12 had her top braces put on about 6 months ago. First week and a half were rough, she cried many times !

If the wires are sticking/poking, go TODAY, just walk in, and have them trim them off flush...

Years ago, I had an orthodontist who just never made sure to cut those things off all the way!!! I know what you are talking about...
