I've decided to get a job after being out of the workforce for 15 years. I am looking into a Teller Position with Wachovia. I was wondering if anyone here is a Teller for a living. Do you like it? Is the money okay?

I used to be a bank teller until DH was transferred and I had to quit my job. I loved it, I worked for a small family owned bank that was open 9-3 M-F. It was the perfect job for me at the time. I didn't make much money but the hours were great and I had a lot of holidays off.

Very cool! These hours are something like 8:15-4:15... I think. They would work perfectly for me, and my children's school schedule. So glad to hear you loved it... I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I was a bank teller for over 2 1/2 years. The bank I worked at was so sales forced they sometimes forget about the customers. I enjoyed working with the people but dont miss the rest of the b.s.

My first full-time job was a teller, and I loved it. I worked at a small community bank in the suburbs of Chicago. It was a great job. I actually learned a ton there and was promoted several times, my last position there was Branch Manger. I worked there for 9 years. Sorry I am rambling

My youngest sister is a teller at National City Bank. The money is not that great. I think she makes about 10.00 an hour or a little less. Now, she had not experience and she is part time.

Good luck

Dh did it for a time when he was first out of school. The money was lousy, and you are expected to dress well. When you figure out how much he was making after expenses, it was barely worth it. Some of his managers were pretty awful, but some were OK.

I worked at Wachovia as a teller at one time. If you are comfortable with sales you will enjoy it. Money isn't great but its not a bad job.

my friend is a teller at a local bank. The pay is not that great and as a previous poster said, you are expected to dress nice. My friend is searching for another job, but for the time being, "it's a paycheck"---her words!!

I was a bank teller briefly (6 months) over 10 years ago. I hated that job. In fact I have never done anything that I disliked more. I felt like I was being punished every minute of every day. I quit and went back to school. I would never work in a bank again. JMHO.

I have been in banking since I was 18 years old. Started out at the teller line and now I am the Vice President of Operations for a Community Bank in Massachusetts. Pay for tellers is usually much higher than the national minimum wage and the benefits can be fantastic. Banks have become more flexible with scheduling and dress codes from when I started which is a plus. The teller line can be stressful as tellers are our first line of defense. (so to speak) But the teller line is where I learned the most. I would say banking is more of a career however not just a job. If one wants to make friends and pass the time and dress casual they would be better somewhere else. Banking worked out for me....good luck with your decision.:goodvibes

I am a Teller Manager for Wachovia and I LOVE MY JOB!!! I love my PAID TIME OFF, FAMILY CARE TIME and my HOLIDAYS!!!!

I have been in banking for 24 years and have held numerous positions within the bank. I have been everything from a part-time clerk in our backroom operations clerk to teller (part & full time), roving teller, teller co-ordinator, branch service manager and back to a Teller Manager.

Teller pay is better than it was years ago. By the time you add in all of our holidays, family care time, PTO and savings plan it is better is makes the total packages quite attractive compared to working in a factory or a an office clerk.

As to clothing, you would be expected to dress professionaly. This can get quite expensive, but with consignment shops and the Goodwill you can begin to build a basic wardrobe without spending a fortune. I tell my newhires that you can never have too many black slacks & skirts.:rotfl2:

My tellers biggest compaints are sales. You have a monthly goal to reach which can be difficult if you haven't ever had to ask for sales. When I was hired there wasn't any selling, but it is highly expected now.

Also, once you get started into banking if you are good at it, other banks will take notice. If they have openings, guess who they will want to hire? Right now, I have one bank trying to get me to leave and come over to the competition. Think of me tomorrow, they want me to call and discuss with them how much $ and how many PTO days it would take to get me to make a move to them.

I say give teller work a try. You will never know if you like it if you don't try it. Good Luck!!

PS: If you have any questions PM me.

What do Tellers sell?

(My mom was a bank teller years and years ago, and later was a bookkeeper at JC Penneey).

I was a teller for 2 years before I decided to get preggo and stay home with DD. It was OK..If you have ever had a retail job and worked with money in large sums you will be fine. At my branch we had abut 15K in our teller drawer daily and our bank kept about 300K in the bank at all times. I worked the drive thru so myself and one other girl had the majority of the customers. We didn't have to sell much since we were out there and not in the lobby and that is the way I liked it. We were blocked off from the rest of the bank so we didn't have a manager breathing down our backs our whole shift either. Not to mention banking can get quite boring at times so being in the drive thru we were ALWAYS working so the day went by faster.

It is all about the cross sale. For example a customer mentions that he has a new baby...your to pick up on that, and recommend a savings account for his college education. Or someone mentions that they are going on a trip and you advise them to take travelers checks. If you notice someones balance is large in a standard savings account, you might recommend a CD or something. It goes on and on and you will be expected to do it.

Just a word of advice here- a bank teller at my bank was trying to sell me something and congratulated me on my new pregnancy. The only problem with that was that I wasn't pregnant and had given birth 3 months before that.:rolleyes1

I've never been a teller, but I was a Customer Service Rep at a bank and a Membership Counselor at a Credit Union. I LOVED my job at the CU! I was very sad to leave and applied at banks the second we got to our new duty station. I ended up at a bank and HATED IT w/ a firey passion. The bank I worked at was extremely sales oriented and was more interested in themselves than the customer. The day they handed me a spreadsheet of people's names and told me to call and sell them something when I didn't have a customer at my desk, I gave my notice.

As far as our tellers went, at both the CU and the bank they got paid above minimum wage. The part-time and peak time tellers made more than the full time tellers b/c they didn't get any benefits. However, you have to decide if it would be worth it monetarily, especially if you have to buy a new wardrobe, as banks do expect you to dress in business attire and look professional.

I am currently a bank teller! Yes I love my job, but the pay sucks!! I have been employed for 7 years here and don't make but $9.30 an hour.:scared1: There are many times that I have thought to leave, but the work is not bad and I really love my job. My company is not all about the sales so for us that is great. If I had to do sales then I don't think I would enjoy my job as much.
Give it a try, hey it's a paycheck so more Disney money!

I was a teller for 4 years. I worked for Chase and for a local Credit Union.
Pay is okay- after 3 years at Chase, I was making $9.80/hr. When I started at the Credit Union, I was a head teller, and started at $12.50/hr. For me, neither job really paid well enought to be my sole income- my husband makes much more than I did, so it was a secondary income.
I have been out of banking for about a year, and have zero desire to go back. It was very stressful to me. Both places had a huge emphasis on sales- at the CU, we even had to sign a paper stating that we could face consequences (including termination) if we did not meet our monthly goals. We expected to offer a product to every person that we helped- ranging from checking accounts to insurance and investments. I did not mind offering things that would truly benefit the customer- such as moving from a basic savings to one with a higher rate. However, we were in no way trained to be offering as much finanacial advice as the bank/cu wanted us to. Chase was even having us lie to customers to get them to sit down with a personal banker.
Also, banking is stressful due to security concerns. Not only do you have to balance large amounts of money every day, but you also have to be concerned with following very strict security policies. We were told to try to vary our route to and from work every day so that we couldn't be followed, not to talk about our personal lives or display personal items. basically, you have to think of every non-employee in the branch as having the potential to be a thief. even if you feel like you know the customer in front of you, you don't know who else in the lobby could be listening to what you are saying.
One last thing. Due to competition, many banks/cu's are extending their hours . While you may start out working 8:15-4:15, there will be a day when they start pressuring you to work later in the day and weekends. "Bankers Hours" don't really exist anymore. Most of the banks locally are staying open from 8am to 5 or 6pm. There is even one that is open from 7:30am to 7:30pm, and is open on Sundays.
Sorry this has been so long. I could go on and on about the things I hated about working as a teller, but I know that nobody wants to hear it!:) I know that there are people who have worked in banking and love it, but I am not one of them. I hope that if you take this job, you can be one of the people who gets enjoyment from it. Good luck with whatever you decide.
