We currently have 3 smart phones (me, dh, dd), $35/mo through Virgin Mobile. No complaints with them. But, my 6th graders are driving me crazy to get smart phones instead of their flip phones (Page plus) because "everyone else has one". I had been ignoring them, I don't think they need them yet, but then I keep seeing commercials for Cricket. It looks like with 5 smart phones we'd get $100 off, so it would be about what we pay now.

Has anyone used Cricket before? How are they? Or are there any other options to get 5 smart phones without breaking the bank?

Keep ignoring them. You are right that 6th graders don't need them. IMO, phones at that age are supposed to be for the parent's piece of mind, not so their kids can be surfing the net.

We've been using VM for years. My kids finally got iPhone 4 through them when they were in HS. Several years later and those phones are still working out for them. Sure, we paid a lot upfront for them, but over time we've saved a lot of money over the others (at&t, sprint, etc).

The only thing I know about Cricket is it's owned by ATT. I'm not sure why they they don't just merge the GoPhone and then Cricket lines all into one brand - I guess just to confuse customers..

My youngest has the Moto E from Republic Wireless and we don't pay for a Data Plan on that phone, it just connects to the internet over WiFi. It's $10 a month plus tax for unlimited Talk and Text. It connects to the internet when he's near WiFi and you can add a data plan at anytime if you want to upgrade it.

The phone was $99 but you'll probably want to put a memory card in there too. It's a pretty decent smartphone for that price. He can put apps on there, load a few movies, and play music. The camera doesn't take the best pictures, but it's more than good enough. It runs on Sprint Towers so you might want to check the coverage maps if you're unsure.

Here's the endgaget review of the phone and then Republic Wireless
