I cleaned out DS's room after Christmas and ended up with 6 garbage bags of clothes:eek: I usually give his clothes away to friends and to the teachers at his daycare, but I'm really in need of money right now, so I thought I'd give the consignment shop a try. I had been hanging on the the clothes because my boyfriends boys are a little smaller than DS so they usually wear them when they stay with us, but they've outgrown a lot of them too, so I think I need to get rid of everything that doesn't fit. What can I expect when I go? I called ahead and they said to bring everything in a basket or a box (no bags) and they will sort through it and will call back later in the day with the amount they will give me. I can then go and pick up the money and any "unacceptable" clothes. Everything is in great condition and alot of it is either from the Gap, Lands End or Old Navy.... DS is really tall and tends to outgrow everything before it shows any signs on wear. Is there a standard amount they give per item?? Do you try to "deal" with the store, or should I just take what they offer me?? I've never done this before....

what size are they? I might be interested..

I have taken my kids clothes to consignment shops for years. They do them differently here though. The shop I go to is very picky, no strains, no "pills", which is good. They price the clothes and put a tag on it. When an item sells, I get 50% of the sale price. I take in clothes at the beginning of each season(winter or summer) and get a check at the end of the season. They donate to a church what doesn't sell. I do pretty well for a little work.

Consignment shops around here give you a percentage of the selling price. We also have twice-a-year consignment sales. I used to work for a friend who had those and I had 3 of my own before I discovered Ebay. I now sell a lot on Ebay and honestly do better than in consignment shops.

Buckleybunch- I have things from size 4T up to a 6 or 7. DS is 5 years old now, but he wears a 7/8 slim in pants (for the length). What size are you looking for? I could go through it all and PM you to let you know what I've got.

Carol- My mom took my clothes to a place like you're describing when I was a kid. They would pay her after the item would sell. I was kind of surprised when they mentioned that they'd buy everything up front.

Noah needs a size 7. The 6's are getting too short on him..
Which is funny, the twins are 2 yrs old then him, and just started wearing a 7.

On a side note, I didn't find out what consignment shops were until I went to college this year. My friend up there who lives a few towns away from me on the island also had no clue what they were!

Which was a shame, cause last spring I cleaned out three large leaf collection bags full of old clothes. Granted I gave them to the Salvation Army, but the extra cash would have been nice.

Wow, that sounded selfish, but you know what I mean :)

I don't think that sounded selfish. Sometimes you have to put your self first. :)

I support our local Goodwill- by buying clothes there.. I'm lucky since I wear a smaller size now I can always find good clothing at GW at a very nice price. So why pay retail.. lol

I used to go to a place that paid cash up front! Loved it! They were pretty picky but I liked getting the $$!! :) Since we've moved I've found one place that gives you store credit and she takes alot more. I was able to get dd a couple outfits and a halloween costume for ds.

Good luck!

I used to do consignement but Ebay is much better for me.

I take lots of pictures, describe it well, and it does better than dealing with the consignment.

I've sold a lot on Ebay.

I've also given some to my sister (a single mom with three kids). Some I also give to Goodwill.

I used to do Ebay, a few years ago.. However, any more it looks like they go for nothing??

I just gave away about 10 rubber maid containers to Good will of women size cloths from 26- 8 ad I still have MORE

I use to take things to Once Upon A Child. They were very picky, but they paid very very well. (sometimes more than what I paid for the items) There isn't one close to me now, so I just give to goodwill. The bad thing about once upon a child, you about had to be the first person there or they stopped buying clothes after they reach a certain amount each day.

Oh, I hope I'm not sounding selfish either. I am a single mom, and this afterChistmas/pre WDW trip is REALLY digging into my bank account. I have always given away all of his old toys and clothes, but this time I just need some extra money. I also have several bags of my own clothes that are going to a womens shelter that my DBF's mother works at.

Another option for you would be put up a couple signs and do a quick garage sale, what doesn't sell can go to the consignment place, and what they won't buy you can donate. At least then you'll get the full buy price instead of splitting it with them...

Jaimee,
Why would you be selfish, because you want to sell your son's clothes??
You paid for them, so why not sell them to make a little money when you are done with them.

No difference then people having garage sales, or selling on ebay, or making stff at craft fairs to sell..

January in Wisconsin isn't garage sale weather :teeth: Otherwise that would be a good idea too. I guess I'll just give this place a try to see what I'm able to get. If it doesn't work I'll know better next time.

Since you have pretty decent brand names, you should be ok with making money with the clothes.

Clothes (espeically kids clothes) can be iffy at Ebay. Since you do have decent name brands, you could list each item a piece.

Or you could do it in lots, but then you have a higher shipping cost for you.

Personally, I do ok with shoes, girls party dresses, and other things.

There aren't that many things out there in Ebay land for boys that doens't look worn... I have a son and would consider buying things from Ebay, but everythign (like jeans and such) always look so beat... I've looked a few times and its discouraging to not find what I like.. that doesn't look worn.

If your things were size 10, we could talk!
