does anyone sell on AMAZON?

I just started. I can't quite figure out the fees yet, but they are pretty high...running about 20% for me. What I do like, is that there is no listing fee and the listing stays up until you sell it or decide to take it down.
What I do not like, is that the shipping costs seem to be fixed and they are low. It cost me $13 dollars to ship something today that amazon charged the buyer and gave me a $5.99 shipping credit.
I don't think I can make selling on amazon a business, but for stuff I have sitting in my house and want to sell I like it.

I sell on both but find eBay more profitable. (I have a store, not just auctions.)

I only sell textbooks, and I usually end up doing really well! The shipping credit is no problem for me because I ship all of my books via media mail which is really cheap.

Amazon fees are ten times higher than Ebay. Ebay just takes somewhere around 3% of your sale price and your shipping charge. The listing fees are usually free or a quater. Amazon takes up to 25% of your sales price and doesn't pay you enough to cover shipping on the items. see info below: (ALso they freely admit if you click on shipping charges and fees to see the table of shipping they pay you that it clearly states you must ship the item even if the amount you are credited for shipping doesn't cover all the shipping fees. so you may need to charge a few more dollars for your item to cover shipping costs)

When your item sells, Amazon collects the sales price and shipping costs from the buyer, deducts a referral fee of 6 to 25 percent of the sales price, a variable closing fee, and a per-item fee of $0.99. The $0.99 per-item fee is waived for Pro Merchant Subscribers.

Here's how it works:

Sale price of the item
Shipping credit
- Referral Fee of 6-25% of the sales price (including any gift wrap)
- Variable Closing Fee
- $0.99 Fixed Closing Fee (waived for Pro Merchant Subscribers)
-------------------------------------
= Total deposited to seller's account

The tables below list the Referral Fee percentages and Variable Closing Fees for each Marketplace product line. See Shipping Rates and Services for a table of shipping credits.

Pricing
Currently you can sell items in four categories at Amazon Marketplace--New, Refurbished, Used, and Collectible. Please check our Condition Guidelines.

Individual sellers may not list items at a price in excess of $10,000 (US Dollars). The exception is Individual sellers approved to list in the Collectible Books category, where there are no price limits for approved sellers. Pro Merchants do not have price limits for items they list for sale on Amazon.com.

You may list items at any price you feel is fair, regardless of the Amazon.com price or list price, within the limits set by Amazon, and so long as your price adheres to our General Pricing rule. However, only items priced at or above the list price (MSRP) or $10, whichever is greater, are eligible for listing as Collectible music or other media products. Collectible books may be listed at any price. Music and other media items priced below $10 or list price may not be listed as Collectible.

General Pricing Rule: By our General Pricing rule, you must always ensure that the item price and total price of an item you list on Amazon.com are at or below the item price and total price at which you offer and/or sell the item via any other online sales channel.

Our pricing terms are defined below:

The item price is the amount payable by a customer, excluding shipping and handling, as it appears when you list an item.

The total price is the amount payable by a customer as well as all terms of offer/sale. This includes all of the following:

shipping and handling charges
any discounts, rebates, or special sales/promotions you offer/make with respect to purchases
the shipping method you use
business practices, such as any reduction or elimination of shipping charges on an order, or of any other order-related fees and expenses
any low-price guarantees
(The total price does not include discounts, sales, rebates, or other promotional offers you attempt to make available through Amazon Marketplace but which we do not honor or support.)

I sell cds on amazon, and I do alright, because I put in my listing that I am not shipping them in the plastic case. I can put a CD in a 99c bubble envelope with all the paperwork and put a .66c stamp on it and it gets to where it's going. So I don't lose money in shipping on cds.

This totally explains why a lego board game I bought my son for Christmas arrived in a bubble envelope and was dented to death. I would have shipped it that way.

Between paypal and ebay fees it worked out to ebay getting about 30% of the list price. I had a store and they were getting 10% off the top. I stopped selling a few years ago.
