Does anyone NOT wear seat belts in cars?

Hi gang,
Sadly i have seen this played out live many times in the past. The one person in a car without a seatbelt is more of a danger to those who have one on than the other car hitting you! This is what happens when 1 person out of 4 in a car does not wear thier seatbelt. Maybe you should show this video to your friend and tell her it comes from a member of the FDNY who has seen this played out live too many times in the past.

This video is a little graphic!!!!!!

Well if that doesn't convince people to wear their seat belts, I don't know what will - other than a horrific totally unnecessary tragedy in their own family, that is..:sad2:

Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the dumbest things a person could do. I don't think I could ever take anyone seriously that didn't. It's just SO stupid.

I absolutely believe they should be mandated. When a person's actions affect others, they no longer have complete say of what they can and can't do. Folks who don't wear seatbelts become projectiles which injure and kill other passengers. Their injuries are more severe than they would have had with the belt, which costs me money through increased Medicare/Medicaid costs, extra work for emergency workers, etc.

My FIL is one of those who doesn't always buckle up. He drives his truck through his own pastures, which are hilly in WV, and doesn't see the need. But he sometimes gets on the road without bucking up, but his trucks always have that pinging alarm and he usually, but not always, buckles up to shut it up.

They had a PSA commercial on recently here that showed a guy in a rollover who was not belted in. (He had some camera in his car, I think to watch his teen kid and that filmed the whole thing.) It was amazing to see this big guy rolled around in the car like a marble in a jar.

No one is in my car without a seat belt, nonnegotiable. My mother was an ER nurse and my BIL is an EMT and just from them, I've heard enough information to make that decision.

It's not only a safety issue, but a liability issue. Years ago, an acquaintance was driving a family friend to dinner. Friend refused to put on a seat belt. They were hit by a driver who went thru a stop sign, so my acquaintance was not at fault, right? NOPE. The friend's imedical nsurance company sued him for not requiring his passenger to wear a seat belt. ANd yes, sued HIM not his insurance company bec there was some sort of clause that removed the insurance company from the equation for something like willful negligence (not requiring passengers to be belted). I remember the case very clearly in part because I was so incensed that the friend had no apparent responsibility for her own safety since she was a passenger.

I bought a 1963 car brand new. Drove it out of the dealer two blocks to Sears and had seat belts installed in the front seat. Back then it was only lap belts. One day I had to make a panic stop. If it wasn't for the belts I would have lost control of the car.

Even if I didn't care about my personal safety, the dinging emanating from my car every 2 minutes would drive me so insane I'd wear my seat belt just to shut it up. ;)

I have known many many people who have been killed in car accident getting trapped under a car.

Really? I'm sorry. I can't imagine one person knowing that many people who were killed like that.

I always wear my seat belt. My dad used to drive an ambulance and always stressed to us that in an accident an unbelted person can kill others who are belted in. For that reason, I'm always careful about what I have on the seat of my car, too.

Everyone in my car must wear their seatbelts. No exceptions.

My MIL would not wear belts period. She would sit in the back seat to avoid them. One day I made a hard stop due to the guy in front of me making a panic stop. And I follow the 2 second rule. The stop was hard enough to throw her into the back of the front seat. She was lucky she didn't get hurt, but she was bruised. She had a cup of pop in her hand which ended up giving my wife, who was in the front, a shower.

Till the day she died she still would not wear a belt, even with me pointing out she could easily fly forward and injure her daughter.

I'm always shocked at the number of people that don"t buckle up. Or the number of kids not buckled up.
I have 5 g-kids, they are all in 5 point harness until 80 lbs. At $250 a carseat, and 2 seats (our car, parents car)for each child thats alot of $$$, but at least they are safe in their carseats. I can tell you that none of my 6 1/2 yr old grandson's friends are in seats. Just boosters. We he asks why he is still in a carseat and not a booster, we tell him that the 5 point seat is our arms rapping him in our love...:grouphug:

That is a very important point. Things like booster seats should be buckled in even when a child is not in them, so they do not become projectiles. In the accident I mentioned I was in in a previous post, I ended up with bruises all over me from cassette tapes and baby food jars(new kitten could not tolerate cat food) that had flown all over during the accident.

That video sends a message loud and clear. Everyone MUST wear a seat-belt. Thanks. :)

Buckle up, it's the law.

Hahah. Seatbelts save lives. Sure it can be uncomfortable, but is it worth crashing through a windshield?

Are there accidents where one would be better off not wearing a seatbelt? Absolutely - but they are a miniscule portion of all accidents. And since one cannot plan their accidents in advance - it is best to wear a seatbelt.

How will you explain to your friends and family that you were gambling on the long shot that you would get into one of those one half of one percent of accidents where having a seatbelt on would make it worse - when you were instead in an accident where you would have walked away if you had been wearing a seatbelt but now you will suffer from life long injuries that will prevent you from taking care of your children?

My car doesn't move until every person has their seat belt buckled.

I knew a highway patrol officer who told me he had removed several dead bodies from car accidents. Never once did he have to unbuckle one of the dead bodies.

My car, my rules. If you do not buckle up, you are free to find an alternative means of transportation. Heck, even my dogs where car harnesses that are buckled in when we travel!

Not buckling up is one of the stupidest things somebody can do. I consider myself a good driver, but you never know what can happen. I have had several incidents that have reminded me how fragile life is:

-It was sleeting one day and I was coming around a sharp curve on a highway I have driven millions of times. Somebody had spun out earlier in the day and kicked gravel onto the road from the shoulder. Between the gravel and the sleet I spun out completely. You know how they tell you to drive into the skid? Yeah, it happened so fast I had no time to react. One minute I am coming around the curve, the next I have jumped the curb onto the grass on the side of the highway. How easily I could have hit somebody else.

-Driving with a friend five deer ran across the road. There was no way to avoid them and I darn near totalled my car. Luckily no injuries but could have been a lot worse. Particularly if we were not wearing our seatbelts.

-Driving home just last week a freak storm hit. A trailer jack-knifed in front of me blocking all three lanes of traffic on our side. Those behind/next to him were involved in the crash. Not far beyond it a tree had fallen across two lanes of traffic. Imagine hitting your breaks trying to avoid it in the dark?

Seatbelts save lives.

My DH will not wear one no matter what I say.

Seat belt saved my life 12 years ago. The belts go on! Its not an option ;)
