Does Anyone Not Watch The News When A Snowstorm Is Expected?

The reason for the question is that I work in a high school which happens to be closed today due to the snowstorm which will be arriving. They are expecting up to 10 inches supposedly so the Superintendent decided to close this school system (and yet, I still have to be here )

Anyways, we've already sent home a half a dozen kids who got dropped off and I have been receiving phone calls from parents calling their child in sick . . .then I say "there isn't school today" and they'll say "why not?" And then I have to explain about the snow, etc . . . Then I'm questioned like I'm lying . . ."well, why are you there?" Believe me, its not like I want to be . . .but we are 12 month employees and unless we use our own time we are here, vacations, summer, you name it . . . Mostly we go by the postal service motto . . .

So who doesn't watch the news when a snow storm is coming?

Is this snow storm really supposed to be that big of a deal?? I saw on the news today (sometimes I watch ) that a school in CT was canceled...must be one close to RI to be on our news. It kind of kills me when they cancel before anything even starts, because it has happened "on occasion" that forecasts have been wrong, believe it or not.

Are you sure you're not just getting your jollies by telling parents there's no school today?

Our superintendent didn't cancel school on a day when everyone around us did, and it was a dreadful weather day. Apparently he caught some flack for that, so a couple of weeks later, he canceled in anticipation of a storm that never happened...not only did it not snow, but it was relatively warm out.

It wouldn't even occur to me to watch the news for school closures before snow has even started! Our schools would just do an early dismissal, so once it started snowing, that's when I'd watch for it.

Where I live it would be crazy to close based on news reports. We only get about half the storms they predict for our area. It's very hit or miss.

Yeah, I know, it's weird . . .but this school district wasn't the only one who cancelled this morning.

My kids get an early dismissal today, which I applaud the Superintendent because who wants to make up the day when you don't really have to? Right now my kids are getting out June 26th (only 1 make up day for snow so far)

Same here. We live in a low lying area and have fog delays all the time. I always need to check out the delays and closings.

My oldest catches the bus to HS at 6:45. No snow or ice yet, but I checked anyway, and school was on. So off to school on the bus he goes.

Around 7:30 I had my other two up getting ready to go when I started to hear some ice on the skylight in the kitchen. Went to the school website (for ES and MS) and sure 'nuf, school's cancelled. The HS has just announced they'll be releasing at noon.

Boy is big brother going to be ticked when he finds out his brothers didn't even have to go in!

Generally the rule of thumb here is that if the roads are at all slick, school is cancelled. We live in a hilly area so the concern is for the busses (and driving HS kids) on the roads- we cancel very easily.

We're in a suburb South of Ann Arbor, and the roads were so icy this morning, that almost all of the school districts closed. Our district decided to stay open. Our high school is releasing the kids at 11, because we have teacher/parent conferences going on from 12-3, and then from 5-7. We live out in the country a bit, and the side roads were awful! My DS called from his car on the way to school, wanting to turn around and come home. I told him to go a little further to the main road, which I knew would be salted. My other DS called from school and said that everyone was angry that the schools in our district weren't closed. I'm wondering it the parent/teacher conferences affected the decision! But yes, I was glued to the TV and the school's website, thinking that they'd close. Surprise!

I know you are right - but our sup. "doesn't believe in snow days" - so there is little point in us watching our weather before anything has started. Sometimes we do - but we really aren't in the habit of doing it enough.

The reasoning here seems to be get them in - at least for the hour and a half it takes to get the state aid - and then deal with whatever comes after. Two weeks ago they put our kids (elem) on the bus in the middle of a huge wind storm (gusts in upper 70's) and KNOWING the school had NO POWER - then left the kids in the parking lot on the buses for the hour and a half before moving them to another school - and ONLY THEN notifying parents - and this is the second time this has happened!!! I kept mine home - as there were already trees down in the road before the bus got here. Can you tell I am a little upset at how our school handles things?

So glad your school has come down on the side of safety - sorry you have to deal with the hassles - hope you get home before the worst of it starts!!!!

I never watch the news because I CAN'T. I have satellite and don't get local stations. I could get them but for $5/month I'll keep my NY stations. I also live in a very rural area and don't get radio stations in my house. If I know the weather is bad I might try to hear the school closing announcement thru the static but mainly I'm dependant on Grandma calling and letting me know since she does get radio reception at her house. I'm just glad I can check the weather online, just wish they'd post school closings online too.

I never watch the news and I don't read the news paper.

Yesterday some people mentioned here on the DIS that snow might come, so than I turned on the Weather Chanel and saw they were calling for ice and snow. It is 11:06 here and we had some sleet and about an 1" of snow, hopefully that's all we get.

I got caught by surprise once and figured it out as I drove into the parking lot and no one was there. I don't watch the news in the morning unless I'm anticipating weather difficulties. If I get up and look out the window and don't see snow I generally figure there is school.

It's snowing really hard right no and it was clear an hour ago.It wasn't supposed to start until after 1..I think we may get more snow than predicted
