Does anyone not take breaks in August?

Hey all

I understand the majority of August travellers take breaks during the day from the parks and spend a couple of hours back at the resort but, does anyone simply stay the whole day:confused3

This is our first trip during August and having only previously traveller when the weather is much cooler, I'm wondering whether we are slightly underestimating the intensity of the heat?

Thank you for input

Hi Annette,

It's extremely hot - for me visiting first thing in the morning is essential.
You can often combine that with returning later in the day, "stay the whole day"? Not a chance for us, it's too hot. Sure many do but they are usually locked up somewhere safe (that's a joke by the way!).

Taking a break midway through the day I think is a must do, especially as you have never been before in August.

the weather is beyond intense.
You really can't imagine how extreme the heat is...and even worse, the humidity!!!

and it really is quite insane for people to be walking around in it...

until this past year, we ALWAYS took a midday break..

in fact, we were always so wiped out from the heat, we often ended up not going back to the parks..

however, this past August, we actually did stay all day in the parks...
and i know why...
because we had the dining plan, we had a sit down table service lunch every day...
most of the meals lasted almost two hours in restaurants that were very well air conditioned..
plus, because the drinks are bottomless, we drank a ton..
we typically each had 5 full glasses of whatever drink it was we'd ordered..

so by the time we were done with lunch we were refreshed and ready to continue our day at the park..

we ended up staying the entire day every single day!!

definitely because of the long leisurely lunches!!

I have not done August but have done July and not taken any breaks. It was OK for us, we would always have proper lunch/ time out period from 12-1.00pm and as we usually arrived at about 9 am we left about 8ish. The only day the I sturggled was when we tried to stay until after midnight to do EMH - never ever again I could hardly walk (but have since come down with MS and I wonder if that day was the first sign of it). This time when we go we will do the parks in the morning then go back to the hotel mid afternoon, and later we will either all go back in or, if I want time out, just the kids (not really kids now 19 and 15 :rotfl:).

But if you are fit and your kids not too young then as long as you are not doing the parks comando style all day then it shouildn't be too bad. Just rest up and people watch it you feel its getting too much or go and see one of the shows, SW is great for cool area shows.
Also if the kids are yonger you'd be surprised what they may find they want to do most. When ours were young we found we spent most of one afternoon watching them play in the magic stream paddling pool in universal, they loved it and didn't want to do any other rides that day.

Many things to take into account,
Your age & fitness
Childrens ages
Do you need to stay all day?

We could stay all day if we paced ourselves but we prefer to do mornings when the parks are quieter then come out mid afternoon.

Relatives with us last August, not a chance, they had had enough by lunchtime.

We've only been in Augusts and need a break to deal with the heat. Sometimes we would swim, sometimes a lunch at our own hotel or another Disney hotel and sometimes we'd just go back to our hotel for a shower and a change of clothes (I seriously underestimated how much luggage to take the first time and had to have a couple of laundry sessions).

Having a break worked well for us because we were staying on property and could easily return to a different park for the evening.

Went in August once and never again. Too humid and the heat was far too strong for us even though it was only 6 weeks earlier than we usually go. I felt my arms crisping in the heat , never experienced that before.

Saying that coming from Scotland we start a shade of blue before we go white let alone brown in the sun :lmao:

Things seemed a lot more hectic in August as well and this just added to the overall stress.

As Wayne says a higher level of fitness would ease things up a fair bit.

For us, not taking a break in the afternoons is not an option. The heat and humidity is so tiring, it is difficult to explain how draining the humidity can be.

We tend to do early mornings, then leave the parks at lunchtime and return in the evening when it has cooled down. To be honest, by late August, the crowds are so light that it is easy to still get everything done that way.

Hi,
weve been a few times in May-its always been wet then. So as we had to stick to the school hols, this time we chose August.
like you I was worried, esp when everyone said we'd need mid day breaks.
however we still planned our full days. I did drum it into my husband, that we may have to change our plans for the breaks.
However Ive got to say that we shouldnt have worried at all, it was perfectly fine and nothing to worry about.
Im very overweight and have a wheelchair to push-I found the heat ok.
Theres plenty of opportunities to pop into an air conditioned shop or have a cold drink, Im sure youll be fine :goodvibes

not been in August but begining of September and the heat and humidity is still intense then as well. Its actually the humidity that does us in, heat we can cope with but heat and being wet all day we don't like. Yes sure its possible to stay out all day but I bet you'll know it after you hit the brick wall at about day 5! We have found it far more enjoyable to pace ourselves in the humidity..I think they say that if it's say, 90 degrees then you need to add an additional 10 degrees on to that because the US weather channels always tell you that it will 'feel like' 100 degrees with the humidity added on! But as a PP said so long as you can get out of it for a while and take in a lot of water and really let your body get back to a good temprature you should be ok.:)

The heat in August is so draining, we have been there when the weather channel says the realfeel temp is over 120! To be honest though even when we have been at other times we have still taken a break as I think if we stayed there all day and evening we would be parked out by about the 3rd day!

I remember planning for July/August once. I had full days and even booked evening shows for us to go too! :rotfl:

It's so humid it just takes all your energy away - at one point in our holiday, we went to see the Pirate show, and had to leave by 9pm as we were nearly falling asleep!:good vibes That was a lesson to me - we now we do rope drop and leave early to mid afternoon- this works much better for us.

Obviously when we go further afield like Busch Gardens etc we have to stay for the day. We just don't bother going out in the evenings on these days. Although i love staying in Disney, it is lovely having a villa to go back to and chill in your own pool sometimes.

My advice would just be to see how you go - everyone reacts differently to the weather, but i do think most would advise to take a break.:thumbsup2

We have been in August for the majority of our visits and tend to spend full days in the parks - DD who was age 7 when we first visited hasn't had any problems with this.

We tend to make sure we take in plenty of indoor attractions/shows where it is air conditioned during the hottest parts of the day, and also try to eat indoors at lunchtime where it is cool. We also take bottles of water that have been frozen that melts during the day so we always have a supply of cool water available between restaurants and snack-stops.

We've been in July and we had small children. We only managed half days and spent most of that jumping into shops and eating places to keep the children cool. The Disney buses even with air con can get a bit gross! It didn't spoil the fun, it just changed the way we approached the parks, we did early mornings and evenings in the parks and spent the days either by the pool or in the mall.

I've been in August several times and done it once without breaks. It was fine, but I'm in my 20s and have no children. I also don't find the heat particularly overwhelming. In fact, I love the weather in August...

Our last two trips have been in August with our DD (6/7) we find that we cannot do full days at the start of the holiday but a few days in and a bit of pacing and we have been known to do full days.

You are not constantly in the heat - queueing for the majority of rides will be in the shade with either fans or AC. All the shops have AC. As others have mentioned, take time out for a meal.

Sit down and kick back and enjoy the views. And dont forget - it rains in August.
