... what the gift is for returning cruisers? I had heard they were beach towels, but then there was a period of time when they were out of towels... Anyone have an update on this situation?

I just got back from the Nov. 6 Western and we received the DCL towel and 2 pins. I look forward to my next one.

when i booked my cruise for next year they said there is also a special reception that you get to go to with the captain is this true?

Yes, there is a reception for you to attend but it is terribly crowded. Get there early.

For our cruise next month I made the request ....anything but the towel.....I now have two of them which is enough for me...
