I saw a house today that had a big yellow ribbon on a tree and above it a "sign" that was diagonal blue and white stripes. Does this have some meaning, like the blue star?

Sounds like it. The person at that house probably has someone serving in 3rd ID. PamOKW, here's a link showing insignia of the Army units involved. Is the one for 3rd Infantry Division what you saw?

Although I don't know them at all, it is once again the case of an immigrant (Vietnamese) family with a child joining our military. Obviously, a proud family.

The fellow who put the flag over the face of Saddam's statue is the son of Burmese immigrants. I also heard that when President & Mrs. Bush visited the injured troops today, they served as witnesses to the swearing in of two or three of them as U.S. citizens. How special to have the President preside at becoming a citizen....and since they've shed blood for us already they are among our best citizens.
