Does anyone know how these people get so many weeks to rent?

There are several people who seem to rent out one unit after another of the DVC resorts (so far have seen OKW mostly and BWV occassionally) for a week's stay for each reservation.

I would think you get these from the II exchanges, but I can't imagine they have that many timeshare units to exchange. Then I can only assume they get these cheap reservations paying several hundred dollars via those "getaway" offers. But if they are from these getaways, I thought you cannot transfer them to others (I don'w own other timeshares except for DVC and I probably don't have all the facts right.)

If you can get them from these getaways, there are great deals, I would love to own a timeshare somewhere else and be able to get these type of accomodations.

Not that I would rent them out to make some $$, but just to use them myself and to save some of my points.

Any input?

I'm not understanding what you are asking exactly.

If you are asking about people here who are taking trip after trip for a week at a clip, that is because they have a lot of points or use them wisely to get the most time for the point.

If you are asking about people with lots of rental ads offers on a rent/trade board, I would inmagine if they don't get a renter for one ad they just post another til they get someone to rent.

I was just looking at the rent/trade board. These ads are a little bizzare. They only want $6.50 or 6.75 a point and are for fixed dates in the fall, so it's not a last minute "fire sale". It does sound like some kind of exchange. There are 2 different names, but I have the feeling they are the same person because they both type in all caps and in the same style.

They've got to be the same person. The ads are almost identical and the phone numbers are from the same area code in Maine. Both exchanges are in Bangor. One is a regular phone and the other is a cell phone.

They are probably exchanges of some kind because all the ads are adamant that the reservations cannot be changed.

Anytime you see a full week, lower price and the idea that it cannot be changed it is almost certainly an exchange gotten through II. I doubt they are getaways, likely exchanges gotten with cheap II deposits. It's not uncommon to get multiple deposits to use and get DVC during off season. This is technically against II rules but done all the time. As long as you're comfortable and get a confirmation in your name, you should be OK if you want to do it.

The price is always appealing but I am just not comfortable dealing with people who got these via exchanges, especially if people think they are the same person using different names.

I was kind of tempted initially but the dates never fit into our travelling schedules, and we tend to prefer resorts other than OKW (OKW is a WONDERFUL resort but we are the hotel type people). Now I am more skeptical if the whole thing is based on trust and they are possibly using multiple names.

What is the benefit of using different names? I did see them bumping each other's threads and was wondering if they are related.

I know people say curiosity kills the cat, but just couldn't help it...

You should be comfortable with whom you deal but I wouldn't necessarily write them off as easily. Since II (and RCI) have rules against renting exchanges, I'm sure these are people trying to avoid detection by II. If something interests you by price and time, contact the person and have an honest discussion with them. You may find you are more comfortable than you think.

hm, yeah i just realized that (the all caps bumping thing)... the other day i looked at one of those posts, and thought... gee this looks familiar.
speaking of trust... why does it always seem like the people who post points for rent are mostly newly registered DISboards members that have low post counts?
either that, or DIS regulars feel the need to create separate DIS accounts just to rent out points.
it seems strange...

disneyberry - interesting observation, never thought about it. Just thought these are people who just found DVC Rent/Trade Board to dispose the points that they can't use, you may have a point for some of them.

BTW, where is the 6th borough?

I can answer this one in regards to a newbie...Diane Irvin, who posted points for rent about a month ago. She has been a DVCer since 1991, but just found out about this board from me.

Dopey Sharon, yes i realize that it's possible that some people really truly are newbies to the DISboards, that is why i say "most", not "all" of the posters seem to be newly registered and have low post counts. but again, the majority seem to be newly registered, and i just find that a little strange/sketchy.

occasionally i do see some regulars who also rent out points, but those are few and far between.
maybe it's just 'cause DISboards regulars keep their points for themselves heh.

btw, "sixth borough" is jersey city... (heh, i'm a nyc transplant living in denial) literally across the river from manhattan. my windows at home look out over the hudson river at downtown manhattan. dbf and i have no car + work + play in the city, hence the living in denial ever since we moved out of nyc...
