RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) for years now in either of my feet at night, I would get this strange feeling that starts up by my knee that goes down into my foot and by the time the feeling reaches my foot, it is so intense that my foot jumps all by itself and then the strange feeling is gone, in about 10 seconds it happens all over and I can never sleep. When i was pregnant it was even worse. Recently I read something about RLS, and was wondering if anybody else has heard of this?

Hi!

My FIL had it for years! In his case, all he did was start taking CalMax (a calcium/magnesium supplement), and it went away. MIL allowed him to sleep in the bedroom again!! LOL!

i will try calcium/magnesium supplements to see if it will help me. Im up so late now because when I try to lay down my feet start kicking all by themselves, LOL and I can't stabd the creeping sensation I get right before my foot twitches. When I was about 9 years old, I use to have my little sister sleep on my foot that was bothering me and then my husband, and when I learned about RLS, I wonder if that is what I have had for years now.

Boy, do I know RLS!!! Unfortunately! I've had it for about a year and a half now...severe. Before I went to the doc's I tried everything, supplements, using the circulation socks, etc. My doc prescribed me Trazadone. It is an anti-depressant, which made me nervous....I complained that I am not depressed! Well, I guess they used to use it as an anti-dep before all the others came out, but found out in very small doses it helps RLS (I take only 25 mg a night). She assured me that the RLS had nothing to do with depression (thankfully as severe forms of depression run in my family!). I've been using it for about a year, however; I'm going to have to go back to my doc this month as I seem to have to take more and more of it to calm my right leg...so now many nights I take 1 1/2 pills. Not a big deal except these pills basically knock me for a loop...meaning I get extremely tired within 15 mins of taking it..not good for the social life when you are out at 9 pm (and my RLS kicks it like clockwork about 9 every night so I have to take them by 8:30 without fail)! I've heard there is something new out there called Requip...I'm going to ask her about that next visit. I'd be anxious to hear from any others who've tried the Requip and its affects on being so darn tired!

I just though I had retarded leg's and feet. I mean for 16 years I have delt with my feet and that sensation and my feet twitching, because I though it was just me, but after I had my 2nd baby, my feet just kept getting worse and then I see a comercial about RLS all of a sudden and I go do research on the computer about RLS and it sounds like I had this syndrome since I was 9. I will talk to my doctor about it. Its at the point where I can't even lay down anymore, Ive been up all night already because of it.

Both my mom and I have this and we are both on meds for it. For us, it's really awful. It can start when we are sitting in a chair/couch before bedtime and then when we go to bed it increases.

My advice...call your doctor. Talk to them to see what they recommend. They might put you on something or there might be something else.

I just read an article in either Health or Body + Soul about magnesium deficiency. Look into that. Also, I know this sounds ridiculous, try putting a bar of Ivory soap under your sheet at the foot of the bed. SIL is a nurse and says this works for many of her patients. Personally, I'd go the magnesium route, but Ivory is a little cheaper . . . :confused3

Magnesium does not help RLS. There are certain things that you can try that might help: cut out caffiene (this helped a little), exercise daily (this helped a bit more), however; please see your doctor. If it is as severe as you say then you will probably need meds. Believe me, I avoid taking meds at any cost! And the meds for my RLS are the only ones I have ever taken on a long term basis in my entire life...but believe me, you will find PEACE!!! I could not sleep at all. What was worse is that people were telling me it was all in my head, that I was MAKING myself feel this way!! That it was due to stress. My doc says none of that is true...it is simply a malfunction in the brain that forgets to tell your legs that you want them to relax. Good luck. I truly feel for anyone with this problem..it is such a terrible annoyance.

You might want to check out www.RLS.org for more info. Last year the FDA approved Requip, the first ever drug specifically for treatment of restless legs syndrome. In addition to medications, there are other things you and your doctor can consider when trying to help you deal with RLS. I've been taking Requip (which is available in several doses) for about 5 months and I can't begin to explain how big of a difference it's made. Good luck!!

thank you all. I was talking to my mother about it last night for the first time ever and she had to laugh when I told her I use to have my little sister sleep on top of my foot when I was 9, we have never even heard about RLS untill recently.

I've read up on Requip. Can you please tell me if it makes you really sleepy or not? That is the only thing I hate about the traz i'm on..it really zonks me out after I take it! My social life stinks! I take it around 8 and I can't keep my eyes open past 9!!
