My son is turning 13 in a few weeks and all he has been asking for is a drum set. His youth director at church has offered to give him lessons and he is so excited.

Okay here is the hang up. My father was a drummer and played with the symphony here and a dance band and loved the drums so before his death J.C. always heard about drums and has always had an interest. However, like most children you never can tell if it will be something he loves or a passing fancy.

So we want to get him drums for his b'day but we don't want to spend an arm and a leg IN CASE its something that he has no interest in after a few months.

Around our area we have found so many different prices. There is a Yamaha set for 600 a CB set for 500 these both have drums and cymbals.

I was looking on ebay and found these,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38097&item=3746660436&rd=1

They look nice but again I have no idea!!

We would like to spend no more than 450-500 with shipping........I could just really use some advice!! I have no problem buying online as long as they can be here within 2 weeks. I just really need help, I'm drum dumb

My first advice is to talk to the youth director. He might have a lead on a local place where you can buy a drum kit. When my son wanted to buy drums, I insisted that he purchase a name-brand set rather than the el-cheapo drums that he found on the internet. We asked around and found a local music store that had just what he wanted. Your price range seems very reasonable for a good set of drums.

Our only problem is that we live in such a small town. The Youth Director actually has a cheap set right now as well. Hes saving for a Ludwig set (same as my dad had).

The CB700 brand is the only brand that we can find here in Greenville. Now in Jackson they have the Yamaha brand. Which brand did you end up buying for your son?

There seem to be so many different brands that besides the Ludwig I just get lost in whats actually a good brand.

I honestly can't remember which drums he ended up with. I can check when I get home.

Beauty,
My DH just bought a set of drums about a month ago off of e-bay. They were one year old and the guy was asking about 400.00. Which was very reasonable because new they would have been about 1100.00. The reason why no one made a bid on them is because the guy did not have a picture with his post. My DH e-mailed the guy and after corresponding felt comfortable enough to buy them. Let me warn you the shipping was about $90.00. My DH researches things to death when he is making a big purchase. He will be here later this evening and I will have him post. I will have him look at e-bay before! Hope it helps!!

Thanks TC and Sabeking I would really really appreciate any help or suggestion your husband could give.

My husband and myself are just so confused because there are sooo many different brands out there. Its really confusing on whats quality and what isn't.

The shipping price will be fine as long as its in our budget......under 500 in all!!

Thanks so so much!

Beth, i pmed you the number of our local music store over here, They had a nice set in there the other night when we carried secret to piano lesson, might be a good deal and closer to home too. Good luck,, Jeff

Keep your eye out for DW drums. They are great drums but they keep costs down with free advertising (they give sets to alternative bands). I've had a Pearl set and a DW set and they are both great sets.

Can you rent them for a couple of months to be sure that he sticks with it? Our local music store has a "rent to own" option so that you can apply any rental payments to the purchase price if you decide to own them. Saves spending money for something he may or may not decide that he likes well enough to continue.

Sorry it took me sooo long to post again. My DH said, that he bought pearl exports. They are intermediate drums. He found his on e-bay and paid just under 500 bucks for the drums, cymbals, seat, hardware and stands. For the money he says they are hard to beat.

He reccomends buying a name brand and for resale incase your son does not stay with the drums. Somebody mentioned DW drums, great drums but too expensive for a beginner (my DH is a beginner).

If you are looking, the following are some drums you can look at.

Pearl Forum or Export
Tama Rockstar
Pacific
Yamaha stage custom
gertsch blackhawk

Good Luck:bounce:

Hi!

Thanks for the information!!

We went ahead and bought some really cheap ones (might have been a mistake) but they were only $200 Shipped so we will see..........if he sticks with it then we will look for more expensive and quality drums.

If you need any more advice, please PM me. My DH is a percussionist so he knows a few things about drums. ;)

Beauty,

If he sticks with and you want to invest in some good drums let me know. I'll send my DH next door to the neighbors house. He was a drummer in a band! He knows all about drums!

Adding humor: Don't forget to get yourself some ear plugs! HEE HEE HEE!
